Brisbane’s Injury Crisis Deepens
Brisbane’s rugby league team is facing a severe injury crisis, with multiple key players sidelined and the situation showing no signs of improvement. The latest setback involves prop Corey Jensen, who has been admitted to hospital in Brisbane after suffering a blood clot in his lung. Jensen flew back home following the 21-20 victory over Wests Tigers, and medical staff have confirmed that he is receiving the best possible care. While the exact timeline for his recovery remains uncertain, it is expected that he will be out of action for several weeks.
In addition to Jensen’s condition, fellow prop Payne Haas sustained a significant injury during the first half of the match in Campbelltown. Scans revealed a grade-three MCL injury, which means Haas will be sidelined for six to eight weeks. This is a major blow for both the Broncos and the NSW team, as Haas is set to miss the State of Origin opener.

Fullback Jesse Arthars also suffered an injury during the clash against the Tigers. According to a statement from the Broncos, Arthars has been diagnosed with a tear to his interosseous membrane in his leg. The team is currently assessing when he might be fit to return to play. Meanwhile, centre Kotoni Staggs played through the match despite an existing injury, but scans later revealed a plantar fascia strain in his foot. Like Arthars, the extent of Staggs’ recovery is still unknown.
With 13 players either ruled out or in doubt, the Broncos are scrambling to assemble a competitive lineup for their upcoming match against Canterbury on Friday night. Hooker Cory Paix is set to return from a one-week concussion absence, providing some relief to the team. However, if Arthars is unable to play, fullback Hayze Perham is likely to start in his place. Perham performed well off the bench during the previous game, making him a strong candidate for the starting role.
Prop Va’a Semu, who was named on the bench but did not feature in the match against the Tigers, is now in line for his NRL debut. Additionally, 19-year-old centre Antonio Verhoeven is being considered as a potential replacement for Staggs if he is ruled out. These changes highlight the challenges the Broncos face in maintaining their usual level of performance amid the growing list of injuries.
The team’s current situation underscores the need for resilience and adaptability as they prepare for the upcoming fixtures. With so many key players unavailable, the focus will be on developing younger talent and ensuring that the remaining squad can step up to the challenge.
