Haddin Hails Sharma’s Grit in India’s T20 World Cup Triumph
Two-time World Cup champion Brad Haddin has showered praise on Indian opener Abhishek Sharma, commending his pivotal role in India’s victorious campaign at the 2026 T20 World Cup. The former Australian wicketkeeper believes that players like Sharma possess an inherent ability to thrive under immense pressure, making them invaluable assets in high-stakes matches.
Sharma was a cornerstone of India’s dominant performance throughout the tournament. His blistering innings in the final provided the crucial impetus for India to post a formidable total, subsequently placing New Zealand on the back foot from the outset. This remarkable turnaround followed a somewhat sluggish start to the competition for the young prodigy.
From Ducks to Dominance: Sharma’s Tournament Trajectory
Heading into the T20 World Cup, expectations were high for Abhishek Sharma to be a leading run-scorer. However, his initial foray into the tournament was far from ideal. The left-handed batsman endured a difficult run, registering three consecutive ducks in the league stage. This included a particularly high-profile failure against fierce rivals Pakistan. A stomach upset also forced him to miss India’s encounter against Namibia, casting a shadow of doubt over his continued selection.
Despite the early stumbles and mounting criticism, Sharma demonstrated exceptional character and resilience when it mattered most. He delivered a match-defining performance in a crucial Super 8 fixture against Zimbabwe, a game India desperately needed to win after a prior defeat to South Africa. Sharma unleashed a rapid-fire half-century, propelling India to a colossal total of 256 runs. This mammoth score proved far too much for Zimbabwe, securing a comfortable victory for the Indian side.
The grand finale saw Sharma escalate his performance to an even more explosive level. He smashed a breathtaking fifty off just 18 deliveries, contributing to India’s third score exceeding 250 in the tournament and ultimately paving the way for them to lift the coveted trophy.
Haddin on Sharma’s Composure Under Fire
Speaking on The Willow Talk Cricket Podcast, Brad Haddin elaborated on the mental fortitude that allows cricketers like Abhishek Sharma to excel when the pressure is at its peak.
“I’m a huge fan of Abhishek,” Haddin stated. “There was a lot of talk about his position throughout the tournament. He got a few ducks in a row in the pool games, and all of a sudden, you think he is under pressure. But they are the guys you want in the big moments, because they are rascals and they walk into the fire. That is what Abhishek does – he puts pressure on the opposition, and the way that he went out in that final set up the game.”
Haddin also offered his perspective on New Zealand’s journey to the final, acknowledging their strong performance while ultimately tipping the more accomplished team to prevail.
“New Zealand have done a good job again to get to a final,” he commented. “I thought New Zealand were really red hot for the final. The way Finn Allen and Tim Seifert were batting. I thought they were in one of those tournament modes where everything is going their way. But the last hurdle [they failed to cross]. The classier team won, didn’t it?”
Sharma’s fearless and aggressive batting in the T20 World Cup 2026 final served as a potent reminder of the rewards that can be reaped from calculated risks taken during pivotal moments of a contest. His ability to rebound from adversity and deliver under the most intense scrutiny underscores his status as a burgeoning star in the T20 arena.
