Halasima’s Late Call-Up Triumph

The New Zealand Warriors have kicked off their season in spectacular fashion, securing back-to-back home victories thanks to a dominant 40-6 thrashing of the Canberra Raiders. This impressive start to the year marks only the fourth time in the club’s history that they’ve managed to win their opening two matches, a testament to their resilience and growing strength.

Halasima’s Star Turn Amidst Adversity

The undisputed star of the show was 20-year-old second rower Leka Halasima, who delivered a career-defining performance with barely a minute’s notice. Originally slated to start on the bench in jersey number 16, Halasima was thrust into the starting lineup after veteran forward Kurt Capewell was sidelined with a calf injury during the pre-game warm-up. Tasked with filling a full 80-minute role in the second row, the young forward not only rose to the occasion but excelled, producing one of the finest displays of his burgeoning career.

In only his second season in the NRL, Halasima showcased a powerhouse performance across the entire match. His statistics speak volumes: two tries, 14 runs amassing 117 metres, a crucial line break, six tackle breaks, and a commendable 35 tackles. He was a defensive force, narrowly trailing teammate Jackson Ford, who led the team with 37 tackles.

This remarkable outing was particularly noteworthy given that Warriors coach Andrew Webster had, just a week prior, spoken about the club’s intention to carefully manage Halasima’s minutes at the top level. “The day will come when Leka will play 80 minutes, and I’m looking forward to that day, because it will be awesome, but he doesn’t need to do it right now,” Webster had commented. “He just needs to own his little time and have that impact.” That anticipated moment of full commitment arrived far sooner than expected, and Halasima seized it with both hands.

Navigating a Sea of Disruptions

The Warriors’ injury woes didn’t end with Capewell’s untimely withdrawal. The challenges continued just nine minutes into the game when playmaker Chanel Harris-Tavita was forced off the field after a knock, necessitating another significant reshuffle of the team’s structure. This led to Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad shifting into the halves, with Taine Tuaupiki being brought into the game from the bench to cover the backline.

Further compounding the adversity, Nicoll-Klokstad himself later left the field for a head injury assessment, adding another layer of disruption for the home side to overcome. Despite these significant challenges, the Warriors demonstrated remarkable composure, maintaining their focus and systematically building scoreboard pressure throughout the remainder of the match.

Ford’s Consistent Powerhouse Display

Another standout performer for the Warriors was Jackson Ford. The robust forward consistently displayed his power and determination, anchoring the forward pack with a strong defensive effort. His contributions weren’t limited to defence, as he also crossed the try line himself, adding to the Warriors’ dominant scoreline.

Webster Praises Team’s Adaptability and Composure

Speaking after the match, coach Andrew Webster detailed the rapid adjustments the team had to make when Capewell’s injury became apparent during the warm-up. He heaped praise on Halasima’s remarkable ability to step up and deliver under immense pressure.

“Honestly, we were all just talking in the sheds about how proud we were of Leka,” Webster expressed with evident satisfaction. “He got a minute’s notice, knuckled down, scored two tries, but his tackling, his defence, his effort areas were the best parts of his game – and he did it for 80 minutes. Happy, super happy.”

Webster also highlighted the team’s preparedness for such eventualities, revealing that contingency plans were in place for a variety of scenarios. “We have something organised for every situation,” he stated. “Capey’ went down in (the) warm-up with a calf, so straight away, we knew that Leka was going to start. We knew, if we got an outside back or half injury, we would activate Taine, and Charnze would move to the halves or centre or wing. We had the plan, and then Chanel went down, so we activated Taine, and then ‘Nuck’ went down, so we put Wayde Egan at half.”

Despite the seemingly chaotic nature of the mid-game adjustments, Webster underscored the calmness and clarity displayed by his players as the most pleasing aspect of the performance. “The best part was the boys were so calm and so clear during adversity,” he remarked.

Looking ahead, the question remains whether Halasima will retain his starting spot for an 80-minute role next week, or if he’ll revert to the bench should Capewell be fit to return. Regardless of the immediate future, the 20-year-old has unequivocally demonstrated across the opening two rounds that he is more than ready for a permanent and significant place in the Warriors’ first-grade squad.
