Marcus Harris Makes History in County Championship
Marcus Harris has once again proven his reliability, becoming the first Australian to score a century in this season’s county championship. His performance continues to showcase his consistent form in England’s first-class cricket.
During the second round of championship matches on Friday, Harris scored an impressive 125 for Lancashire against Derbyshire at Old Trafford. This achievement highlights his ability to perform under pressure and contribute significantly to his team’s success.
Harris, who previously accumulated over 1000 runs for Lancashire last summer with an average of more than 60, quickly found his rhythm in his first match since the disappointment of losing the Sheffield Shield final with Victoria. He batted for nearly four hours, hitting 14 fours and two sixes in his 182-ball innings, leading Lancashire’s total of 351.
In response, Derbyshire struggled, losing their prolific Australian opener Caleb Jewell, who was bowled for a three-ball duck. They ended the day on 1-0, showing the impact of Harris’s performance.
Fergus O’Neill Shines for Nottinghamshire
Harris was not the only Victoria player to shine; Fergus O’Neill delivered a brilliant all-round display for champions Nottinghamshire. O’Neill, who made a strong start in Notts’ championship charge in 2025, continued his momentum against Glamorgan.

The holders were struggling at 6-103 when O’Neill came in at No.8, launching a counter-attack with Jack Haynes in a century partnership. Haynes went on to make a hundred, while O’Neill contributed crucially with 59, including 11 boundaries. Notts rallied to reach a total of 279.
Glamorgan’s new NSW paceman Ryan Hadley, who took six wickets in his opening match, continued his promising start by taking 4-76. His Sydney-born Dutch international teammate Timm van der Gugten was equally effective with 4-54.
When Glamorgan batted, Test prospect O’Neill struck twice in his first 14 balls, not allowing any runs as he dismissed both openers. He finished with impressive figures of 6-4-6-2, leaving the Welsh county at 4-81 at the close.
Other Notable Performances
Test allrounder Beau Webster played a key role in helping Warwickshire recover after they slumped to 3-22 against Sussex. With England allrounder Chris Woakes scoring 64, Warwickshire managed to reach 267 all out at Hove in the division one clash before the home side replied on 0-17, with Daniel Hughes unbeaten on eight.
Ben McKinney’s Remarkable Achievement
The standout performance of the day came from England prospect Ben McKinney. He made history by becoming Durham’s youngest double-centurion at just 21, scoring an unbeaten 214 in their 2-456 against Gloucestershire. This achievement is sure to catch the attention of selectors and highlight his potential as a future star in English cricket.
This day showcased the talent of several Australian players and their contributions to their respective teams, highlighting the competitive nature of the county championship. The performances of Harris, O’Neill, and McKinney underscore the depth of skill and determination present in the current season.
