Harry’s Reflections on Therapy and Fatherhood
During a recent visit to Australia, the Duke of Sussex shared his personal journey with therapy and the challenges of fatherhood. Speaking at an event hosted by Movember, which focuses on men’s health, Harry discussed how he recognized the need to address past issues before becoming a parent.
Harry was seen at the Whitten Oval, the headquarters of the Western Bulldogs football club, where he met with supporters of the men’s health charity. He received personalized miniature shirts featuring the names of his children, Archie and Lilibet, as a token of appreciation.
The Importance of Self-Improvement
In his talk, the duke emphasized the importance of being the best version of oneself for one’s children. He stated, “I knew that I had stuff from the past that I needed to deal with, and therefore prepare myself to basically cleanse myself of the past.” This sentiment reflects his commitment to personal growth and self-awareness.
Harry engaged in a discussion with Dr. Zac Seidler, the global director of men’s health research at Movember. He highlighted the evolving dynamics between parents and children, noting that “conversations that are now happening in households between kids and parents that never existed between me and my parents.” This observation underscores the changing landscape of parenting in modern times.
A New Perspective on Parenting
The duke described his approach to parenting as viewing children as an “upgrade.” While not suggesting that his children are an improvement over him, he emphasized the importance of adapting to the world that today’s children will inherit. “Our kids are our upgrade,” he said, reflecting on the responsibility of raising the next generation.
Harry also spoke about the initial disconnection he felt during the early days of fatherhood. “I felt a disconnection because my wife was the one creating life, and I was there to witness it,” he shared. This experience highlights the emotional complexities of becoming a parent.
Navigating the Challenges of Fatherhood
Wearing a taupe shirt and jeans, Harry reflected on the practical aspects of fatherhood. He mentioned the advice given by his therapist: “Be aware of how you feel once the baby is born.” This insight emphasizes the emotional adjustments required when transitioning into parenthood.
Harry noted that the stress of work could affect his interactions with his children. “Every single time I went to work and I came back – if I was stressed, the moment that I held Archie, he would start crying.” This observation illustrates the deep bond between parent and child.
Embracing Change and Flexibility
Harry also shared his experiences of working from home, particularly during the pandemic. “During Covid, it was like, well, this working from home thing is really not great when you have like small kids running around, jumping into your meetings,” he said. This candid reflection highlights the challenges of balancing work and family life.

Engaging with the Community
The duke took part in a casual game of Australian rules football with players from the Western Bulldogs. He played in his Chelsea boots, discussing the differences between the sport and rugby. His enthusiasm was evident as he ran across the pitch to interact with children, offering encouragement and praise.
Harry also posed for photographs while holding a Western Bulldogs scarf, showing his support for the local community. He witnessed a performance by The Wiggles on the pitch and even joined in with a little wiggle of his own, demonstrating his playful side.

The Impact of Movember
The Movember movement, founded in Melbourne in 2003, has grown into a global initiative focused on improving men’s health. The campaign encourages men to grow moustaches during November to raise awareness about mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.
Through its efforts, Movember has raised hundreds of millions of pounds across more than 20 countries. In Australia, the term “Mo” is commonly used as slang for moustache, highlighting the cultural significance of the campaign.
Harry’s participation in the event underscores the importance of open conversations about mental health and the role of fathers in shaping the future. His insights and experiences offer valuable perspectives for parents and caregivers alike.
