A Rising Star in English Football
Mohamed Toure has been making waves in English football, and his remarkable start to life in the country has surprised even himself. The Socceroos striker continued his impressive run-up to the World Cup by scoring a second-half hat-trick, leading Norwich to a thrilling 4-2 Championship comeback victory over Bristol City.
At just 22 years old, Toure has already made a significant impact since joining Norwich from Danish club Randers in January. He has netted eight goals, including two hat-tricks, and provided three assists, showcasing his versatility and talent on the pitch.
This form has positioned Toure as one of the most exciting players for Socceroos coach Tony Popovic ahead of the group stage games against Turkey, the United States, and Paraguay in June. When asked if he anticipated such a successful start, Toure admitted, “Nah, I can’t say I did. I just wanted to come here and learn and improve and take my game to the next level, but I didn’t expect to score this many goals in such a short time.”
Toure’s performance not only helped his team secure a crucial win but also lifted ninth-placed Norwich to within eight points of the playoff places with three games remaining. This victory marked Toure’s first start since returning from a groin injury, which he has been gradually recovering from.
“I think that’s the most important thing,” Toure said in an interview with Norwich’s club media. “Yes, scoring goals and assists are important, but the most important is that my body is starting to feel better. Slowly, with the physios, they’re helping me feel better week in, week out. So I think that’s the most important for me; the next step is to get my body to 100 per cent.”
A Dramatic Turnaround
The match began with Bristol City taking an early lead after just two minutes when Sam Morsy scored with a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box. However, Toure soon turned the game around with a stunning hat-trick in just 25 minutes.
Norwich equalized in the 51st minute when Toure headed the ball into the net, despite a great save by Radek Vitek. Moments later, Toure was shown a yellow card for simulation after going down under a challenge from Vitek.
In the 70th minute, Oscar Schwartau broke away from defense to set up a simple tap-in for Toure, who added another goal to his tally. Five minutes later, Toure completed his treble with a fortunate deflection on Paris Maghoma’s long-range strike.
This was Toure’s second hat-trick for Norwich, following a remarkable debut performance against Oxford United in February. Jose Cordoba extended the lead to 4-1 in the 78th minute with a far-post header, while substitute Sam Bell scored a stoppage-time consolation for Bristol City.
Other Socceroos Players in Action
Elsewhere in England, Socceroos midfielder Alex Robertson played a key role in Cardiff City’s promotion to the Championship. Nestory Irankunda featured for 77 minutes as Watford lost 2-0 to Sheffield United, while Cam Burgess played a full game in Swansea’s 2-1 defeat to Southampton.
Harry Souttar remained on the bench as Leicester City fell 1-0 to Portsmouth. These performances highlight the ongoing success of Australian players in English football, with several making significant contributions to their respective teams.
