A buzz is building among film aficionados, with many convinced that a new installment in the Cloverfield franchise is lurking in plain sight, reportedly featuring none other than Anne Hathaway in its starring role. Following her memorable turn in The Devil Wears Prada 2, Hathaway is set to headline The End of Oak Street, a forthcoming science fiction thriller produced by the acclaimed JJ Abrams, the creative force behind Bad Robot.
Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the film promises a thrilling narrative centred on a family thrust into an extraordinary and perilous new reality. Their entire neighbourhood is inexplicably transported to an unknown, mysterious location following a sudden, cosmic event. Hathaway embodies the role of Denise, the matriarch, alongside Ewan McGregor as her husband, Greg. Together, they face the daunting task of keeping their family united against a backdrop of unimaginable threats, including, as suggested by early reports, the terrifying presence of dinosaurs and other bewildering cosmic phenomena.
The trailer’s ominous opening lines from Hathaway – “Our house, our neighbourhood, our whole street has moved” – hint at the profound disorientation and danger the characters will experience. However, for a segment of the audience, this is merely the tip of the iceberg.

Given JJ Abrams’s production company’s significant involvement in the original Cloverfield (2008) and its subsequent sequels, speculation is rife that The End of Oak Street might secretly be a new chapter in the beloved franchise. Social media platforms are abuzz with fan theories. For instance, user Warren42 on X (formerly Twitter) expressed, “I’ll be shocked if this isn’t part of the Cloverfield world.” MitchAdams2013 echoed this sentiment, stating they were “99% sold on this being a Cloverfield movie,” while Scribbles69 described it as a “backdoor Cloverfield reveal.” The plea “please be a Cloverfield movie PLEASE,” from yezkhev, and maddfinnnnnnn17’s declaration that they would “lose her mind” if the theory proved true, underscore the intense anticipation.
Several elements lend weight to these fan conjectures. The events of the 2018 sequel, The Cloverfield Paradox, saw a rogue particle accelerator cause the disappearance of five city blocks, a scenario bearing a striking resemblance to the predicament faced by the Oak Street residents. Furthermore, the surname of the family in The End of Oak Street, identified as the Platts, shares a connection with TJ Miller’s character in the original Cloverfield film, adding another layer of intrigue.
Could The End of Oak Street Be a Secret Cloverfield Sequel?
Despite the compelling fan theories, a significant hurdle stands in the way of a direct Cloverfield connection: distribution rights. The End of Oak Street is slated for release by Warner Brothers, whereas all previous Cloverfield films have been distributed by Paramount Pictures. This logistical challenge suggests that any link to the Cloverfield universe would likely need to be an unofficial or “off-the-books” arrangement between the two major studios, unless a formal agreement is struck.
However, this wouldn’t be the first time JJ Abrams, also known as a co-creator of the acclaimed series Lost, has surprised audiences with a clandestine Cloverfield release. In 2016, the cinematic world was astonished when a film initially known only as ‘The God Particle’ was revealed to be a surprise Cloverfield sequel. This film, subsequently retitled The Cloverfield Paradox, became the third entry in the franchise and ignited a keen anticipation for Abrams’s next potential “trick.”

Following that revelation, eagle-eyed fans quickly worked themselves into a frenzy with the announcement of Overlord, another Abrams-produced film, set to premiere on Netflix. However, Abrams himself eventually debunked these rumours, and Overlord was released in 2018 as its own standalone entity.
Addressing the ongoing fan speculation about secret Cloverfield installments, Abrams has previously assured that a “true, dedicated” Cloverfield sequel will eventually materialise. Reports from Den of Geek indicate that he has also hinted that future Cloverfield films, unlike The Cloverfield Paradox which debuted as a Netflix exclusive, are likely to receive theatrical releases.
The End of Oak Street is scheduled to hit UK cinemas on August 14, 2026.
