Essendon Faces Crucial Test Against Western Bulldogs
Essendon’s journey through the 2024 AFL season has been anything but smooth. Under the guidance of coach Brad Scott, the Bombers are facing one of their toughest challenges yet as they prepare to take on the second-placed Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium. This match could prove pivotal for the team, especially considering the long-standing struggles that have defined their recent performances.
A Challenging Season So Far
The Bombers have endured a difficult start to the season, with a series of poor results that have left them in a precarious position. Their opening games against Hawthorn and Port Adelaide were far from impressive, and last weekend’s narrow loss to North Melbourne only added to the pressure. If Sunday’s game against the Bulldogs goes as expected, Essendon will match their club-record losing streak, a mark set in 2016 when the team was hit by a major drugs scandal that led to widespread suspensions.
Injuries have also played a significant role in the team’s struggles. Last season ended with 13 losses, largely due to a string of injuries that hampered their performance. This year, the situation hasn’t improved much, with key players like forward Nate Caddy now sidelined due to concussion.

Coach Brad Scott’s Unwavering Approach
Despite the odds stacked against them, Scott remains steadfast in his belief that the team must push forward and embrace the challenge. When asked if the Bulldogs should aim to limit the margin, he admitted the question was fair but stressed that the right mindset is crucial.
“You have a go at the opposition. We’re at the stage where we’ve got to go out with an attitude and a plan to get the job done,” Scott said. “That’s what we did all of last year. Clearly we had challenges in that and we have challenges right now, but as soon as you sit on your heels and get on the back foot and try to mitigate a margin … even if you do it, are you taking your team forward?”
Scott emphasized that the team’s focus should be on improvement and pushing their limits, rather than settling for a safer approach. He pointed to the investments made in the club and reiterated that the Bombers must continue to strive for better results.
Key Players and Defensive Challenges
For Essendon, the spotlight will fall on players like Zach Merrett and Darcy Parrish, who are expected to deliver strong performances. Merrett showed signs of recovery in the previous game, while Parrish is looking to bounce back from a run of injuries that have affected his form.
However, the Bombers’ defensive struggles remain a concern. They will face a formidable challenge in Sam Darcy, the Bulldogs’ star key forward. Although Darcy managed just one goal in the team’s win over Adelaide, his presence on the field is always a threat. As Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge noted, teams often go to great lengths to disrupt Darcy’s game.
“Obviously Sam because of his presence and what he can do, teams are putting everything they can to physically interrupt his game. I’m sure Essendon will be no different,” Beveridge said.
Looking Ahead
As the match approaches, the pressure is on Essendon to show resilience and determination. With Scott’s leadership and a clear focus on improvement, the team may yet find a way to turn their season around. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the Bombers can overcome their current challenges and start climbing up the ladder.
