“Have a Go”: Winless Bombers Told to Challenge Bulldogs

Essendon Faces a Crucial Test Against the Western Bulldogs

Coach Brad Scott is determined to push his Essendon team to their full potential, even when the odds seem stacked against them. The Bombers are currently in a tough spot, having endured a challenging season so far. With no clear path to success, Scott is urging his players to believe in themselves and take on every challenge head-on.

If Sunday’s AFL match against the second-placed Western Bulldogs goes as expected, Essendon will tie their club-record losing streak. This record was set in 2016, during a period when the club faced significant challenges due to a drugs scandal that led to widespread suspensions. The current situation, while different, is just as difficult for the Bombers, who have been plagued by injuries throughout the season.

Last year, Essendon ended with 13 losses, and this season has started similarly poorly. After opening with underwhelming performances against Hawthorn and Port Adelaide, the team narrowly lost to North Melbourne last weekend. Now, they face a formidable opponent in the free-scoring Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium.

The Bulldogs have had a strong start to the season, securing three wins already. When asked if the Bombers should aim to limit the margin of defeat, Coach Scott acknowledged the question but emphasized that it wasn’t the right mindset for his team.

“You have a go at the opposition. We’re at the stage where we’ve got to go out with an attitude and a plan to get the job done,” he said. “That’s what we did all of last year. Clearly we had challenges in that and we have challenges right now, but as soon as you sit on your heels and get on the back foot and try to mitigate a margin… even if you do it, are you taking your team forward?”

Scott also highlighted the importance of continuing to push forward despite the difficulties. “We’ve talked about these investments that we’ve made and we’re not going to back off. We’ve got to keep pushing and trying to improve and get better. Mitigating a margin just to make it easier for everyone to breathe a bit is not the way I approach it.”

Essendon faces additional hurdles as key forward Nate Caddy has been ruled out due to concussion. The team will rely heavily on Zach Merrett, who showed signs of improvement against North Melbourne, and Darcy Parrish, who is working to regain his best form after a run of injuries.

Defensively, the Bombers have struggled, and they’ll need to find a way to contain the Bulldogs’ star key forward Sam Darcy. Although Darcy managed only one goal in the Bulldogs’ win over Adelaide, his presence on the field is always a threat.

“Obviously Sam because of his presence and what he can do, teams are putting everything they can to physically interrupt his game. I’m sure Essendon will be no different,” said Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge.

As the Bombers prepare for this high-stakes encounter, the focus remains on resilience, determination, and the belief that they can still turn things around. With Scott leading the charge, the team is being urged to embrace the challenge and fight for every opportunity to prove their worth on the field.
