Background of the Case
A former music teacher at a prestigious grammar school in Belfast has been charged with serious offences following his appearance in court. The individual, Robert James Briscoe, was seen standing in the dock at Belfast Magistrates Court, where he confirmed his identity and acknowledged the eight charges brought against him.
The indictment covers a specific period from 30 September 2025 to 10 March 2026. Briscoe faces two counts of child human trafficking, as well as several other charges including paying for the sexual services of a child, administering a substance to the complainant to overpower or stupefy them in order to facilitate a sexual offence, and attempting to pay for sexual services.
In addition to these allegations, Briscoe is also facing three drug-related charges. These include possessing and intending to supply Class A methamphetamine, as well as simple possession of Class B nandrolone. Although no details of the alleged offences were outlined in court during the hearing, a police officer stated that they believed they could link Briscoe to each of the charges.
School’s Response
Jenny Lendrum, the principal of Methodist College Belfast, reached out to parents during the Easter break to inform them about the situation. In a letter obtained by the Belfast Telegraph, Mrs Lendrum stated that the school had no prior knowledge of the information in the press or the charges against Mr Briscoe. She assured parents that Briscoe is not permitted on the school site and will not be working with pupils or staff while the legal process continues.
Mrs Lendrum emphasized that the alleged behaviour reported today contradicts everything the school stands for. She mentioned that there is currently no information suggesting that any of the school’s pupils have been impacted, but she pledged to monitor the situation closely and take appropriate action if needed. She also encouraged anyone with relevant information to come forward and reach out to her via email.
Legal Proceedings
During the court hearing, a prosecuting barrister informed District Judge Anne Marshall that “the file is in” but requested a four-week adjournment for an update on a decision. The defence solicitor, Adrian Harvey, disclosed that Briscoe is on a “precautionary suspension” from his teaching position. He added that this employment will likely be terminated following Thursday’s hearing.
Briscoe has also served as the manager of the City of Belfast Youth Orchestra. Judge Marshall released Briscoe on bail, ordering him to remain at his home address and banning any contact with the complainant. While granting legal aid, she expressed some hesitation in her ruling.
