Hearts Remain Unshaken in Title Race
Hearts are currently leading the Scottish Premiership by three points over Rangers, with Celtic trailing by five points after a recent defeat to Dundee United. Despite this, manager Derek McInnes remains confident that Celtic should not be written off, especially under the leadership of Martin O’Neill.
McInnes has emphasized that the defending champions are still a significant threat in the title race. He highlighted that it would be unwise to rule out Celtic, regardless of their recent performance. “One hundred per cent. You wouldn’t discount a Martin O’Neill Celtic team at any juncture,” he said. “They’re a good side, they’ve got good players and they’ve been over the course. I think they’ve got a fantastic manager. It was obviously a blow for them, but there’s still a lot of football to be played and I think anybody ruling Celtic out would be foolish.”
The Jambos are on the verge of making history, potentially ending 40 years of Old Firm dominance in the top-flight title. This makes their current position even more remarkable, as they have defied expectations in a league where the financial disparity between teams is stark.

McInnes pointed out that Hearts, along with Falkirk and Motherwell, have overachieved this season. “You couldn’t say that about everybody, but I think us three are probably ahead of where we thought we could have been this season,” he said. “We’ve now been elevated into a position that probably nobody thought we could be at this stage of the season. I think when you look across Europe, across the world, for a team to have the disparity in wages and spending power as against the other two (Celtic and Rangers), it’s so unusual.”
Hearts have managed to stay at the top of the league despite the financial challenges they face compared to their rivals. “We’re probably the only team that could be top of the league for so long and certainly top of the league with so few games to go. There’s teams who have spent a lot more, with a lot more expectation on them in our league who should be at the top of the league, but they’re not. We’re there, we’re enjoying it and we just need to try and keep maintaining our good work for the rest of the campaign.”
Injuries and Squad Updates
With the title race heating up, Hearts will face Livingston on Sunday. The team has received some positive news regarding key players returning from injury. Stephen Kingsley and Craig Halkett are set to return, while Stuart Findlay may also be available. However, there are concerns about the fitness of Harry Milne and Tomas Magnusson.
Milne is expected to miss the game due to a calf injury, while Magnusson suffered a fresh setback. “Magnusson had a mask fitted and was training absolutely fine, but he’s picked up a thigh strain now, doing some shooting on Wednesday,” McInnes explained. “He’ll miss the game and we’ll get a wee bit further investigation on him to see how he is.”
Despite these challenges, the Hearts squad remains focused on their goal of securing their first title since 1960. With the right combination of determination and form, they could make history in the coming weeks.
