A Legacy of 50 Years on Coronation Street
Helen Worth has opened up about the reasons behind her departure from Coronation Street, a year and a half after her dramatic exit. The 75-year-old actress, who portrayed Gail Platt for an incredible 50 years, is one of the show’s most enduring stars. Her decision to leave came after a long and storied career that saw her character involved in some of the soap’s most unforgettable moments.
Throughout her time on the show, Gail Platt was at the heart of numerous dramatic storylines. She was married six times, including to Brian Tilsley (Christopher Quinten), who was tragically killed, and Martin Platt (Sean Wilson), another long-standing character. Gail’s life was filled with emotional highs and lows, including her daughter Sarah’s teenage pregnancy and the death of her fourth husband, Joe McIntyre (Reece Dinsdale), during a failed life insurance scheme.
One of Gail’s most iconic moments came in a 2003 episode when she discovered that her husband, Richard Hillman (Brian Capron), was a serial killer. This revelation shocked audiences and cemented Gail as one of the soap’s most compelling characters.
Helen has shared how the experience of filming became increasingly challenging over the years. She admitted that the final year before her departure was particularly tiring, which ultimately led to her decision to step away from the show.

In an interview, Helen said: ‘It was only a bit towards the end when I got a bit tired. But the first, how many years? 49 years, were a dream.’ She also reflected on her final husband, John Thomson, saying he was ‘absolutely gorgeous to me’ because by then she was ‘rattling a bit.’
Helen made it clear that she would not be returning to the soap full-time. She said: ‘I had good and bad days… but then you forget the bad days and you just remember the good days.’
Her final exit from the show was marked by a heartfelt message on Christmas Day 2024. As a celebrated soap star, Helen took to X with a video thanking fans for their support throughout her time on the ITV show.

In her farewell message, Helen appeared in a smart blue blazer over a bright red turtle neck, sitting in her character’s well-known lounge. She expressed her gratitude for being part of the Platt family for so long and thanked everyone for joining her on this journey.
She said: ‘Hello all of you. It’s wonderful to have this opportunity to say ta ta. It’s been a fabulous 50 years and I just wanted to thank all of you some of you who may have been watching for 50 – is there anybody? And those of you who have been watching for a few years thank you. Thanks for coming on the journey with me. I’ve had a wonderful time. I’ve loved it, all the stories and of course it’s been wonderful working with the wonderful Platts, which for me is what it’s all about – and there’ll be more Platt stories and I hope you’ll be watching. Lots of love and thanks from me.’
Helen’s final episode was as intense and dramatic as her 50 years on the show had been. The Christmas day storyline included an engagement, a pregnancy, an arrest, multiple fights, and a lot of tears. It was a fitting conclusion to a remarkable chapter in British television history.
