Unexpected Spoiler in Hollyoaks Episode Sparks Frustration Among Fans
Hollyoaks fans have been left in shock after a major death was accidentally revealed ahead of its scheduled air date. The unexpected leak has sparked outrage among viewers, who are now questioning why such a significant plot point was spoiled before it was meant to be shown.
The incident occurred following a dramatic cliffhanger in the April 1 episode, which saw Gemma Bissix reprise her role as the villainous Clare Devine. The episode featured a tense reunion between Clare and her grandfather, Froggy (played by John Middleton), which quickly turned into a confrontation when Froggy urged her to turn herself in and face jail time.
Clare refused to comply, leading to a struggle that ended with two gunshots being heard by the audience. This moment was intended to be the focus of the next episode, set to air on Bank Holiday Monday. However, the outcome of the shooting was inadvertently revealed through an error on the Hollyoaks YouTube channel.
The video was labeled as: ‘The Death of Froggy Black,’ and the description read: ‘He finally opened his heart… Only for Clare to tear a bullet straight through it.’ This detail was not meant to be shared so soon, and fans were quick to express their frustration.
One fan commented on Reddit: ‘I just don’t understand why the copy writer would spoil the next episode like that.’ Another added: ‘I hate that they spoil it in the thumbnail!’ The Daily Mail has reached out to Hollyoaks for further comment on the matter.
John Middleton’s Departure from Hollyoaks
This incident comes at a time when actor John Middleton is reportedly stepping down from his role in Hollyoaks. According to reports, he has decided to leave the soap after only six months on screen, leaving producers scrambling to create an ‘explosive’ exit for his character, Froggy Black.
Middleton joined the cast last year, playing the role of Fraser ‘Froggy’ Black Sr., a previously incarcerated criminal. This marked a significant departure from his most well-known role as the kind-hearted vicar Ashley Thomas in Emmerdale, which he portrayed for 22 years.

According to The Sun, the decision to leave was made by Middleton himself, and the show’s bosses are still deciding whether to kill off the character or leave room for a potential return in the future. A source told the publication: ‘Bosses believed they were onto a winner by signing up John to play a cockney villain because the character was so different to his loveable role on Emmerdale. But John has now decided to bow out. He told them of his decision to quit and bosses have been left to come up with an explosive exit for him.’
Froggy’s Role in the Soap
Upon arriving in the village, Froggy reconnected with his granddaughters, Grace Black and her sister Clare Devine. Drama quickly followed, with Clare fatally shooting Grace in a conflict involving Grace’s son Rex (Jonny Labey).
Froggy remained close to Rex and his police detective son Sully (Harry French), although he eventually expelled Sully after learning of his racist behavior.

During his time on Emmerdale, John’s character Ashley married three times: first to Bernice Blackstock and later Laurel Potts on two occasions. His children, Gabby (Rosie Bentham) and Arthur (Alfie Clarke), each from a respective marriage, remain in the soap as regulars.
In the beloved vicar’s final storyline, Ashley tackled a heartbreaking battle with degenerative vascular dementia, which ended with his death. Heartbreaking scenes saw Ashley regain consciousness for his final moments, able to utter his wife’s name ‘Laurel’ for the first time in months.
Speaking to The Mirror at the time of his Emmerdale departure, John said: ‘People are stopping me in the streets saying thank you for doing this, and that is in many ways the best award. Particularly when you are talking to people who have got direct contact with this disease, who have lost loved ones to it, or who are caring for people with it, or people who have the disease. They say thank you for portraying it so accurately, so that makes me immensely proud.’
