Home Depot Grill Brushes Recalled: Bristles Pose Ingestion Risk

Massive Voluntary Recall Issued for Popular Grill Brushes Over Serious Injury Concerns

A significant voluntary recall has been announced for over 10.2 million Nexgrill metal-wire bristle grill brushes, sold primarily at Home Depot. The recall stems from concerning reports of bristles detaching from the brushes, leading to potential ingestion hazards and serious internal injuries that have, in some instances, required surgical intervention.

The grill manufacturer initiated the recall on Thursday, encompassing six specific types of its grill brushes. The company has stated that the small metal wire bristles can break off, adhere to the grill surface or food, and subsequently be ingested. This poses a substantial risk, particularly given the potential for internal damage.

Affected Grill Brush Models

The following models are included in this widespread recall:

  • 19-inch Grill Brush (Model No. 530-0024)
  • Grill Cleaning Brush with Scraper (530-0024G)
  • Long Handle Grill Brush (530-0034)
  • Grill Brush and Scraper (530-0039)
  • Grill Brush with Scrub Pad (530-0041)
  • Wood Handle Grill Brush (530-0042)

According to Nexgrill’s official website, the recalled brushes feature metal wire bristles attached to either a black plastic or a bamboo wood handle. To distinguish the affected products, consumers are advised to check for a Nexgrill logo on the plastic handle or stamped on the back of the bamboo handle. Products lacking these specific markings are not part of this recall.

All the models subject to this recall were available for purchase at Home Depot stores across the country and through the retailer’s website. These brushes were sold between 2015 and 2026, with prices ranging from $5 to $15.

Reported Incidents and Safety Warnings

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has documented at least 68 incidents where small wire bristles detached from these grill brushes. Alarmingly, five of these reports involved consumers requiring medical attention to have bristles removed from their digestive tracts or throats.

The government agency strongly advises consumers to cease using the recalled grill brushes immediately. To initiate the recall process and receive a full refund, consumers are instructed to contact Nexgrill. The refund will be issued in the form of a gift card.

How to Claim Your Refund

The recall registration process requires consumers to:

  1. Contact Nexgrill: Obtain a registration code for the recall.
  2. Upload Proof: Visit the dedicated recall website and upload a photograph of your grill brush. This photograph must clearly display the registration code and your initials.
  3. Receive Confirmation: A confirmation email will be sent once your registration is successfully processed.
  4. Dispose of Brush: You will then receive instructions on how to safely dispose of the recalled grill brush.

The value of the gift card issued will range from $5 to $15, depending on the specific model of the grill brush purchased by the consumer. Nexgrill emphasises that consumers should dispose of the brushes even if they appear to be in good condition.

Nexgrill’s Commitment to Safety

In a statement, Nexgrill reiterated its unwavering commitment to customer safety, stating, “Safety is our top priority. Our goal in the production of our grill brushes is simple: giving our customers a way to safely clean and maintain their grills as they enjoy the All-American BBQ tradition with family and friends.” The company further highlighted its ongoing efforts to ensure product safety, including providing clear instructions for consumers to examine brushes before use, discard any with loose bristles, and thoroughly check cooking surfaces for stray bristles prior to cooking. This proactive recall underscores the importance of consumer safety in product manufacturing and retail.
