Western Bulldogs Suffer Heavy Loss, Key Players Injured
The Western Bulldogs faced a significant setback in their recent match against Hawthorn, with a 42-point defeat highlighting several key injuries that could impact the team’s performance moving forward. Among those affected is influential midfielder Ed Richards, who suffered an ankle injury during the game.
Richards was visibly in pain as he left the Adelaide Oval after the match, which saw Hawthorn secure a commanding 14.14 (98) to 7.14 (56) victory. The Bulldogs’ coach, Luke Beveridge, confirmed that the team will need to wait for medical scans to determine the full extent of Richards’ injury.
“We don’t know the extent of it yet,” Beveridge said. “We will have a look at it through the imaging … we’re just hoping it’s not too bad, but I can’t give you anything until the medical staff give us something definitive.”
If Richards is sidelined for an extended period, it would be a major blow to the Bulldogs, especially considering the ongoing absence of ruckman Tim English due to a knee ligament injury. Beveridge noted that the club still does not have a precise timeline for English’s return.
“It will probably be mid-next week, they’re just waiting for it to settle to give you that prediction,” he said.
Ruckman Absence Impacts Midfield Performance
Without English in the ruck, the Hawks’ duo of Ned Reeves and Lloyd Meek dominated the hit-outs, with a staggering 64-17 advantage over the Bulldogs. This imbalance placed additional pressure on the Bulldogs’ midfield group, which struggled to cope with the lack of ruck support.
Beveridge expressed his frustration with the situation, stating, “They had 21 hit-outs to advantage to our three. So that’s a really difficult thing for our midfield group to deal with.”
He also acknowledged the efforts of his players, saying, “I thought the boys did reasonably well, when you consider how many hit-outs to advantage they had. It highlights the importance of that part of the game, if you have got a ruckman or ruckmen that have some dominance.”

Additional Concerns for Hawthorn
Hawthorn also left Adelaide with concerns about another key player, Mabior Chol, who limped off in the first quarter due to a hamstring injury. Coach Sam Mitchell expressed hope that the injury might be precautionary, possibly caused by cramping.
“But when a guy who is as big and as strong and as powerful as he is comes off with a grab of his hamstring, then doesn’t come back on … we’ll wait for scans and get a vibe of that over the next few days,” Mitchell said.

Looking Ahead
Both teams now face the challenge of managing their injured players while preparing for upcoming matches. For the Bulldogs, the loss of Richards and the continued absence of English could significantly affect their strategy, particularly in contests where ruck dominance plays a crucial role.
For Hawthorn, the injury to Chol adds another layer of uncertainty as they aim to maintain their strong form. As both clubs await further updates from their medical teams, fans will be closely watching how these developments shape the rest of the season.
