Richard Osman is officially handing over the reins of the popular BBC quiz show House of Games. After a successful tenure, the bestselling author is stepping down to dedicate more time to his writing commitments, and the mantle is being passed to none other than acclaimed actor Michael Sheen.

The transition, announced earlier this month, has sparked considerable interest, particularly regarding how the handover will be managed. Osman, who is deeply integrated into the fabric of the show, has now provided some insights into the process.
Speaking on his podcast, The Rest is Entertainment, Osman confirmed that the show will be rebranded as Michael Sheen’s House of Games. He also shared a lighthearted anecdote about lobbying to keep his name in the title, though his efforts were, in jest, unsuccessful.
A New Era for House of Games
The changes extend beyond just the title. The coveted prizes awarded to the weekly champions will also undergo a transformation, now featuring Michael Sheen’s likeness. This has put to rest any concerns fans might have had about a surplus of unused prizes.
“We tend not to over-order with the prizes,” Osman explained, reassuring viewers that there are very few left from his era. “One of the things they’re currently doing is producing prizes with his face on. So it will be called Michael Sheen’s House of Games.”

While filming for Osman’s final episodes and Sheen’s inaugural ones has not yet commenced, the 55-year-old Osman is preparing for his final week of taping in Salford, where the show is produced.
The Handover Episode
Osman elaborated on the handover process to his co-host, Marina Hyde. A special episode will be filmed to mark the transition, ensuring a smooth continuation for viewers. It’s important to note that Michael Sheen will not be appearing as a contestant during Osman’s final run of episodes, which are scheduled to air this autumn.
“We all want everyone to know how delighted we are Michael’s doing it,” Osman stated. “So there’s a continuation. I want to welcome him as well. He’s got the best team in telly there and he’ll have an absolute ball.”
A Future Guest Appearance?
When questioned about the possibility of appearing on Michael Sheen’s House of Games as a contestant in the future, Osman expressed his eagerness. However, he believes a period of adjustment is necessary.
“I think that’s too meta and you have to let someone get their feet under the table,” Osman commented. “But one day I’d love to. In a few years. Christmas week or something like that.”
He concluded by sharing his well wishes for Sheen: “I wish him such luck. I messaged him the other day and said this is such a fun show to do and such a lovely gang. It’s a great show for him and he’s a great host for it.”
Michael Sheen’s House of Games is set to debut on the BBC this autumn, marking a new chapter for the beloved quiz show.
