New Ruck Rules Offer Strategic Advantage for Geelong
Sam De Koning, a key player for the Geelong Cats, believes the new ruck rules introduced by the AFL will provide his team with a significant advantage in matches. The changes are particularly beneficial for tall players like De Koning, who can take full advantage of their jumping ability during centre bounces.
The AFL made several adjustments to the ruck rules during the off-season. One of the most notable changes is that ruckmen will no longer be allowed to cross the centre line before engaging with their opponents. This rule change is expected to level the playing field and give players with strong jumping skills an edge.
De Koning shared his thoughts on the new regulations, highlighting how they align with his strengths as a player. “I think that my athleticism, in terms of jumping and not being blocked out of the way by some of the ruckmen who like to come across the line, I know that I defaulted to that position,” he said. “But I think that the new rule of being able to jump really helps my game in the centre bounces, for sure.”
A Versatile Player
De Koning’s career has seen a steady evolution, starting with his role as a key defender. However, over the years, he has gradually taken on more responsibilities in the ruck. Last season, he participated in approximately 10% of ruck contests, and he is now preparing for a more prominent role in 2026.
“I think the ruck is definitely in play,” he added. “I pride myself on being able to be a flexible player for the team. If the coaches see me in that role, then I definitely see myself as a multi-faceted player who can play in multiple positions. It is definitely on the cards for 2026.”
Unconventional Ruck Line-Up
Geelong has long been known for its unconventional approach to ruck play. The team has typically relied on a combination of players such as Mark Blicavs and Rhys Stanley. De Koning and forward Shannon Neale have also played significant roles in the ruck, contributing to the team’s unique strategy.
The league has also introduced a rule that allows umpires to restart play without a nominated ruckman present. This move is aimed at speeding up the game, which benefits teams like Geelong that have a ruckman in each line.
” I think we have been able to work over opposition rucks well in the past by utilising multiple ruckmen across the ground,” De Koning explained. “With the new rules about the quicker ball-ups, it is going to be good for us.”
