The Influence of Taylor Swift on David Lowery’s New Film
David Lowery’s upcoming film, Mother Mary, features Anne Hathaway in the role of a tormented pop star who seeks help from a scorned friend, played by Michaela Coel, as she prepares for a grand comeback concert. The film is set to hit theaters on April 17 and includes a stellar cast such as Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs.
Lowery shared with Empire that he was heavily inspired by Taylor Swift’s 2018 Reputation tour and its accompanying concert film when developing the character’s performances and identity. “Her Reputation concert film is one of the best concert films ever,” he said. “It’s truly phenomenal. And for our concert sequences, we looked at that repeatedly.” He added, “You would not believe the amount of time we were talking about Taylor.”
The director also revealed that Reputation served as a template for certain scenes, particularly when it came to budgeting. “We took three songs from Reputation and broke them down, shot by shot, and looked at them like, ‘Okay, if we were doing these, how much would these shots cost to do in visual effects?'” Lowery explained. “We used that as a budgeting tool, because we didn’t know how to wrap our heads around actually pulling off a stadium concert-show on a minimal budget. We were literally using Reputation as a guide.”
Swift’s influence on the project was so profound that, after Mother Mary wrapped, Hathaway gifted Lowery a “Taylor Swift style beaded bracelet” with “Anti-Hero” on it—a nod to Swift’s massive 2022 hit from her 10th studio album, Midnights. Lowery added that both he and Hathaway attended her Eras Tour in Europe. “I definitely brought a lot of Taylor Swift to the table in terms of who Mother Mary was,” he said. “I would often be like, ‘Imagine Taylor Swift in 10 or 15 years – that’s sort of who this character could be.'”
A Pop Star Backdrop with Original Music
The pop star backdrop of the film will be soundtracked by original music from Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs. This collaboration brings a fresh and dynamic energy to the film, enhancing the narrative and emotional depth of the story.
The Role of Concert Films in Shaping the Narrative
Lowery’s decision to draw inspiration from Reputation highlights the importance of concert films in shaping the visual and narrative elements of modern cinema. By analyzing the techniques used in Swift’s tour, Lowery was able to create a unique and visually stunning experience for audiences without exceeding the film’s budget.
A Unique Blend of Art and Performance
The film’s blend of art and performance is further emphasized by the inclusion of multiple talented actors and musicians. Each character and musical contribution adds layers to the story, creating a rich and immersive experience for viewers.
