TikTok Influencer’s Tragic Passing After Cosmetic Surgery Shocks Online Community
A vibrant online personality, known to her 80,000 TikTok followers as @midlifeunmuted, has tragically passed away following complications from a “mummy makeover” procedure. Rachel Tussey, who openly shared her journey towards the cosmetic surgery, including a tummy tuck, succumbed to unforeseen issues that arose shortly after the operation. Her husband, Jeremy, has shared the heartbreaking details of her declining health and eventual death, sending ripples of shock and sadness through her dedicated online community and beyond.
Rachel had been documenting her preparations for the surgery, which took place on February 25th, with the hashtag #mommymakeover. She had been sharing her experiences and excitement with her followers, who had grown to appreciate her candid approach to life and her positive outlook.
A Sudden and Devastating Turn
Just a few days after the procedure, Jeremy posted a poignant video on Rachel’s TikTok account, explaining the grave turn of events. He recounted how the surgery itself had reportedly gone well, with her doctor assuring him of its success before he left the facility for the day. However, while Rachel was in the recovery room, it became apparent that something was terribly wrong.
“Next thing you know, I look down, and her face is off colour,” Jeremy shared, his voice heavy with grief. He initially attributed the change in her appearance to the immediate aftermath of the surgery, perhaps a temporary effect of anaesthesia or reduced blood flow.

Tragically, Rachel soon became unresponsive. Hospital staff immediately commenced CPR. She was subsequently transferred to TriHealth Bethesda North Hospital, where she was placed on life support. The situation escalated rapidly, and Jeremy was informed that his wife had been declared brain dead, having suffered a significant period of oxygen deprivation – reportedly six minutes – which doctors stated led to irreversible damage.
Surgeon’s Account and Family’s Grief
In a statement provided to People, Rachel’s surgeon maintained that the operation was completed successfully and without any complications during the procedure itself. The surgeon explained that post-operative monitoring was the responsibility of the independent facility where the surgery took place, not their direct practice, as Rachel was scheduled for an overnight stay.
The surgeon was later notified of Rachel’s deteriorating condition and immediately returned to assist in her care and facilitate her transfer to Bethesda North Hospital. They expressed their commitment to supporting the family during this incredibly difficult time. The statement also confirmed that the surgeon has ceased all procedures at that particular surgical centre and, out of respect for Rachel and her family and to adhere to patient privacy laws, would not be making further comments.
The family’s GoFundMe page, established to help cover the unexpected and extensive medical expenses, revealed that Jeremy made the heartbreaking decision to remove Rachel from life support on March 5th. Sadly, Rachel passed away two weeks later, on March 17th.
Bernie Layne, the family’s lawyer, released a statement expressing the profound sadness and regret of the family. He conveyed their gratitude to the countless individuals worldwide who had offered their prayers and support throughout this extraordinarily challenging period.
A Life Dedicated to Helping Others
The GoFundMe page, which had garnered significant donations towards its $40,000 goal, painted a vivid picture of Rachel’s character. It described her as a woman “truly full of life,” who “loved adventure, cherished her family deeply, and lived as an example of what community and compassion should look like.”
The page highlighted Rachel’s unwavering commitment to helping others. It detailed her efforts in organising donation drives in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, where she personally collected and delivered essential supplies to those in dire need. Her innate desire to assist those facing hardship was a defining characteristic, making her a beacon of generosity and selflessness.
Rachel Tussey leaves behind her grieving husband, Jeremy, and their three children: Tristan, Alec, and Livi. Her passing serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with any medical procedure, even those intended for aesthetic enhancement, and the profound impact such losses have on families and online communities alike.
