Now available in the UK on HBO Max, The Pitt is a mega-hit created by the team behind the iconic series ER. It stars Noah Wyle, one of the original cast members from ER, who plays Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch. The show has received multiple Emmys and has built a massive fanbase since its US debut in 2025. Viewers have not only created memes based on the show but also shout quotes at the cast while they walk the streets of Los Angeles. At the center of the show is Dr. Robby Robinavitch, played by Wyle. He is a seasoned doctor whose calm demeanor masks his personal struggles following the death of his mentor. Wyle, now 54, was originally known for his role as John Carter in ER, where he first appeared when he was just 23. He starred in 11 seasons of ER before moving on to roles in shows like Falling Skies and The Librarians. His return to the medical genre came after the pandemic, when he felt the need to contribute during a time of crisis.
Wyle had initially avoided playing a doctor, believing it was a well-trodden path. However, the experience of watching first responders work tirelessly during the pandemic changed his mind. The show, which he co-writes and directs, has given his career a new lease of life. Instead of marking the end of his career, The Pitt has reinvigorated it.
Ahead of auditions for the show, Wyle sent out a mission statement emphasizing the seriousness of the project. For Gerran Howell, who plays the character Dennis Whitaker, it served as a powerful reminder of the intensity of the work. “It was almost like a warning,” he recalls. “He basically said, ‘We’re putting together something here that is going to be really, really intense. It’s not for everyone, but we’re giving you the opportunity to be part of something that matters.’ You never get stuff like that.”
Katherine LaNasa, who plays nurse Dana Evans, found the audition to be a chance to be herself. For the 59-year-old actor, this was a rare opportunity. “I had a harder time when I was starting because I was leading-lady-looking in a weird girl’s brain. Networks didn’t know what to do with it. Dana made me feel like I could be myself; that I could be really outside the box and bring all my quirkiness.”
The set of The Pitt is unique compared to most modern television productions. There is a strict no-phone policy, and cast members are expected to stay on set while others shoot their scenes. This creates a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose among the actors. Wyle, who once looked up to mentors like Anthony Edwards and George Clooney, now finds himself in a position of leadership. He describes his approach to welcoming new cast members as something he learned from Rob Reiner, who passed away this year. “He taught me that everyone wants to do a good job and is terrified that they’re not going to be enough. And so you want to dispel that as quickly as possible.”
The cast of The Pitt is supported by a team of medical experts, along with cheat sheets and video recordings that help them understand complex medical jargon. “I have to know what I’m saying – that way I know the severity of a patient that I’m talking about,” LaNasa explains. Wyle agrees, adding, “I don’t think that you can organically deliver a line if you don’t really understand what it means.” To make the trauma scenes realistic, the actors learn their lines like a dance routine and often interact closely with the supporting actors playing the patients.
Howell recalls a scene where he had to work with an actor who had five different instruments in his mouth. “I was trying to remember the choreography and also trying not to hurt this actor. There’s only so much you can fake! It’s a wacky situation. At the end of it, you don’t know what you’ve done. It’s just siphoned off somewhere in your brain.”
Wyle emphasizes the importance of accuracy in the show. “If we say it on the show, you can believe it’s true.” This commitment to realism extends to the politically sensitive topics the show tackles, such as vaccine conspiracy theories, gun ownership, and the use of AI in hospitals. Season two also explores the behavior of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the US. Wyle believes that presenting multiple perspectives is crucial for meaningful storytelling.
The Pitt is not only challenging viewpoints through hot-button issues but also correcting misconceptions about the work of emergency room staff. Nurses, for example, are portrayed as essential rather than just an appendage. LaNasa appreciates the show’s respect for nurses and hopes it changes how people perceive them. Howell adds that the show helps the public understand the emotional toll medical workers endure daily.
The show is set to conclude its second season in the US, with a third season already in development. It will premiere in January 2027. Wyle, who has been the heart of the show, is committed to continuing his role. “I’m committed, not only contractually, but also emotionally, to exploring this for several more seasons.” He feels that the show is still halfway through the mental health journey of its main character and is eager to see it through.
