Ipswich Town Secures Promotion to Premier League
Ipswich Town made a triumphant return to the Premier League after a 3-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the Championship season. This win secured them the second automatic promotion spot, ensuring their place in the top flight for the upcoming campaign.
Wrexham’s remarkable journey through the divisions came to an end as they were denied a spot in the promotion playoffs following a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough. Hull City took their place in the playoffs, thanks to a 2-1 win against Norwich City.
Ipswich needed a win to finish as runners-up to Coventry City, and early goals from George Hirst and Jaden Philogene ensured they would secure the position. Kasey McAteer added a third goal late in the game, sealing the victory and sparking celebrations at Portman Road.
Millwall and Middlesbrough also had chances of automatic promotion if Ipswich failed to win. Millwall defeated Oxford United 2-0 to finish third, just one point behind Ipswich, while Middlesbrough drew 2-2 with Wrexham. This result ended Wrexham’s hopes of a fourth consecutive promotion, as they finished seventh.
Hull City’s win over Norwich City meant they finished two points ahead of Wrexham in sixth place. Hull will face Millwall in the playoff semi-finals starting on May 8, while Middlesbrough will take on Southampton, who are in-form after reaching the FA Cup semi-finals.
Southampton finished fourth, level on 80 points with Middlesbrough, after defeating Preston North End 3-1 at Deepdale.

Derby County had also been in contention for the final playoff spot but lost 2-1 at home to Sheffield United, despite being in the lead during the match.
The final whistle at Portman Road sparked a wave of celebration as hundreds of Ipswich fans flooded the pitch. Blue and white fireworks lit up the sky, creating a memorable moment for the club and its supporters.

Ipswich were promoted to the Championship in 2023 and quickly rose to the Premier League the following season. However, they were relegated last season after accumulating only 22 points.
Manager Kieran McKenna expressed his emotions after the victory, stating, “It means a lot. I have to say, it’s probably been the hardest one (of our three promotions in four years) if I’m honest. It’s brilliant.”
He continued, “I know how hard we’ve had to work to turn it around. As a club, we had such a climb and a steep fall. We’ve had to rebuild this team under difficult circumstances, and we deserve to be where we are today.”
Coventry City, managed by Frank Lampard, won the Championship title with a 4-0 victory over Watford on the final day, finishing with 95 points.
