Ipswich Town Secures Promotion to Premier League
Ipswich Town made a triumphant return to the Premier League after a 3-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the Championship season. This win secured them the second automatic promotion spot, ensuring their place in the top flight for the upcoming campaign.
Wrexham’s remarkable journey through the divisions came to an end as they were denied a spot in the promotion playoffs following a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough. Hull City took the final playoff spot, finishing just two points ahead of Wrexham.
Ipswich needed a win to secure their position as runners-up to Coventry City, and early goals from George Hirst and Jaden Philogene ensured they would not be denied. Kasey McAteer added a third goal late in the game, sealing the victory and sparking celebrations at Portman Road.
Millwall and Middlesbrough also had chances to secure automatic promotion if Ipswich had faltered. Millwall defeated relegated Oxford United 2-0 to finish in third place, just one point behind Ipswich. Meanwhile, Middlesbrough drew 2-2 against Wrexham, which ended their hopes of a fourth consecutive promotion.
Hull City’s 2-1 victory over Norwich City was enough to place them in sixth position, two points above Wrexham. They will face Millwall in the playoff semi-finals starting on May 8, while Middlesbrough will take on Southampton, who are in-form after reaching the FA Cup semi-finals.
Saints finished fourth, level on 80 points with Middlesbrough, after defeating Preston North End 3-1 at Deepdale.

Derby County also had a chance to qualify for the playoffs but lost 2-1 at home to Sheffield United, despite being in the lead during the match. The final whistle at Portman Road led to an outpouring of joy as hundreds of Ipswich fans flooded the pitch, and blue and white fireworks lit up the sky.

Ipswich had been promoted to the Championship in 2023 and quickly rose back to the Premier League the following season. However, they were relegated last season after accumulating only 22 points.
Manager Kieran McKenna expressed his pride in the team’s achievement. “It means a lot. I have to say, it’s probably been the hardest one (of our three promotions in four years) if I’m honest. It’s brilliant,” he said. “I know how hard we’ve had to work to turn it around. As a club, we had such a climb and a steep fall. We’ve had to rebuild this team under difficult circumstances, and we deserve to be where we are today.”
Frank Lampard’s Coventry City clinched the Championship title with a 4-0 victory over Watford on the final day, finishing with 95 points.
