New Laws to Restrict Iranian Visitor Arrivals
Australia is implementing new legislative measures designed to bolster the integrity and long-term viability of its migration system, with a specific focus on temporary visa holders from Iran. The federal government recently fast-tracked legislation through parliament, empowering it to block individuals arriving from designated countries on temporary visas for periods of up to six months. The new restrictions are set to take effect imminently, with an “arrival control determination” being enacted for visitors from Iran. This specific rule will exclusively target individuals currently outside of Australia who possess a Visitor (Subclass 600) visa and whose passport is linked to Iran.
Exemptions and Case-by-Case Considerations
It is important to note that several categories of individuals will be exempt from these new restrictions. Iranians who are already within Australia or are currently in transit to the country will not be affected. Furthermore, spouses and dependent children of Australian citizens and permanent visa holders will also be exempt, ensuring family unity is maintained.
In specific circumstances, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke indicated that a limited number of individuals may be granted a “permitted travel certificate.” These exceptions will be assessed on a case-by-case basis, allowing for flexibility in individual situations.
Mr. Burke elaborated on the rationale behind the changes, stating, “There are many visitor visas which were issued before the conflict in Iran which may not have been issued if they were applied for now.” This highlights the evolving geopolitical landscape and its potential impact on migration patterns.
