Iranian Missile Strike Injures 40 in Israeli Town Near Nuclear Site

Missile Strike Rocks Dimona, Injuring Dozens

A significant missile attack has struck the southern Israeli town of Dimona, leaving at least 40 people injured, the Israeli military confirmed on Saturday evening. The strike, which targeted a residential area, has prompted international concern and raised tensions in the region.

Among the injured, a 10-year-old boy is reported to be in serious condition, suffering from shrapnel wounds. A woman sustained injuries from flying glass fragments, while an additional 37 individuals are being treated for less severe, mild injuries. These casualty figures were reported by Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency medical service via their X account.

The attack on Dimona, a town notably housing a key nuclear facility, is reportedly an act of retaliation. Iranian state television has stated that the missile strike was in response to an earlier attack on its Natanz nuclear facility, located approximately 50 kilometres from Kashan. This Iranian facility was targeted on Saturday. However, the Israeli military has explicitly stated it was not responsible for the strike on the Natanz site.

International Atomic Energy Agency Monitoring Situation

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has issued a statement indicating it has received no reports of damage to the Negev Nuclear Research Centre, which is situated in Dimona. Furthermore, the agency has reported that no abnormal radiation levels have been detected in the vicinity. Despite these initial assessments, the IAEA emphasised that it is “closely monitoring the situation.”

G7 and EU Condemn Regional Attacks

In the wake of these escalating events, the foreign ministers of the G7 nations, along with the European Union, issued a joint statement on Saturday. They unequivocally demanded an “immediate and unconditional” cessation of attacks by the Iranian regime against its allies across the Middle East. The statement expressed the strongest possible condemnation of “the regime’s reckless attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, including energy infrastructure, in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Iraq.”

Dimona’s Significance and Israel’s Nuclear Stance

The desert city of Dimona holds particular strategic importance as it is home to Israel’s primary nuclear research centre. Established in 1958, the facility has long been a subject of international speculation. Israel has maintained a policy of neither confirming nor denying the widely held belief that it possesses nuclear weapons. This recent missile attack, targeting a town with such a sensitive facility, underscores the volatile geopolitical landscape of the region. The implications of this strike, both in terms of regional security and the ongoing nuclear discourse, are expected to be significant in the coming days and weeks.
