Missile Strike on Dimona Sparks International Concern
At least 40 individuals have sustained injuries following an Iranian missile strike that impacted the southern Israeli town of Dimona, a location significant for its nuclear facility. The Israeli military confirmed the incident on Saturday evening, reporting that the missile struck a residential area.
Among the casualties, a 10-year-old boy is in serious condition, having suffered shrapnel wounds. A woman also sustained injuries from glass fragments. The Magen David Adom service in Israel reported via their X account that an additional 37 individuals are receiving treatment for minor injuries.
Iranian state television asserted that the attack on Dimona was a retaliatory measure for a strike on Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility earlier on Saturday. The Natanz site, located approximately 50 kilometres from the city of Kashan, was reportedly targeted. However, Israel’s military has stated it was not responsible for this alleged strike on the Natanz facility.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has indicated that it has “not received any indication of damage to the nuclear research center Negev.” The agency further stated that “no abnormal radiation levels have been detected” and that it is “closely monitoring the situation.”
International Condemnation and Calls for De-escalation
The escalating tensions have drawn swift condemnation from the international community. The G7 foreign ministers and the European Union issued a joint statement on Saturday, demanding an “immediate and unconditional” cessation of the Iranian regime’s attacks against allies in the Middle East.
The statement strongly condemned “the regime’s reckless attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure, including energy infrastructure, in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Iraq.”
Dimona, situated in the desert, is home to Israel’s primary nuclear research center, which commenced operations in 1958. While Israel has never officially confirmed or denied widespread assumptions about its possession of nuclear weapons, the presence of such a facility in a region experiencing heightened military activity adds a layer of complexity to the unfolding events.
