Arad Reels After Ballistic Missile Strike: Dozens Injured in Southern Israel
A devastating ballistic missile attack on the southern Israeli city of Arad on Saturday night has left at least 84 people wounded, with 10 sustaining serious injuries. Among the severely injured is a five-year-old child. The attack, attributed to Iran, has sent shockwaves through the region, prompting a massive emergency response and declarations of mass casualty events.
Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s national ambulance service, reported that beyond the 10 seriously wounded, 19 individuals were in moderate condition, and 55 suffered light injuries. An additional four people were treated for anxiety following the harrowing experience. United Hatzalah, another prominent medical rescue organisation, stated that its teams attended to over 90 individuals at the Arad scene.
The injured were swiftly evacuated by ambulance and helicopter to Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba for urgent medical attention. MDA confirmed that while there were no reports of individuals trapped under rubble, extensive search efforts were ongoing at the impact site.
Yakir Talker, an MDA Emergency Medical Technician, described the scene as “very serious.” He recounted the arrival of numerous ambulances, mobile intensive care units, and MDA medicycles, encountering a multitude of patients with injuries of varying severity resulting from the missile strike.
Emergency Response and Medical Efforts
The immediate priority for medical teams was to establish a casualty concentration point, triage patients based on the severity of their injuries, and administer life-saving treatments. Talker highlighted the “extensive destruction and chaos” at the scene, with teams conducting comprehensive searches and prepared to operate for as long as necessary.
Soroka Medical Center declared a mass casualty event to manage the influx of wounded. The Ministry of Health later announced its intention to facilitate the transfer of some patients to other hospitals. This measure aims to alleviate the pressure on Soroka and ensure that all those injured receive the highest standard of care. In a crucial step to support the medical response, MDA’s blood bank supplied Soroka with at least 90 units of blood.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that Home Front Command’s search and rescue teams were deployed to the site, assisting in the evacuation of residents. The military has launched an investigation into the failure of air defence systems to intercept the missile that struck Arad, as well as another direct hit reported in Dimona earlier the same day.
Prime Minister’s Condolences and Resolve
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the evening as “very difficult” in the ongoing “battle for our future.” He extended his condolences to the wounded and their families on behalf of all Israeli citizens and pledged full governmental assistance to those affected by the strike.
“We are determined to continue striking our enemies on all fronts,” Netanyahu stated, underscoring Israel’s unwavering stance.
IDF Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Effie Defrin echoed the Prime Minister’s sentiments, wishing the wounded a speedy recovery via a post on X (formerly Twitter). He confirmed that air defence systems had been activated but were unsuccessful in intercepting the missile.
“We will investigate the incident and learn from it,” Defrin remarked. “This is not a special or different weapon than the one we are familiar with.”
Impact on Daily Life and Education
The missile strikes in Arad and Dimona have had a direct impact on civilian life. Following the incidents, Education Minister Yoav Kisch announced the cancellation of the planned return to in-person classes across the country for Sunday. This decision reflects the heightened security concerns and the need to ensure the safety of students and educators.

The events in Arad serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by Israel and the devastating consequences of ballistic missile attacks on civilian populations. The coordinated efforts of emergency services, medical professionals, and the military highlight the nation’s resilience in the face of adversity. Investigations into the air defence failures are expected to provide crucial insights into enhancing protective measures against future threats.
