Kasey McAteer’s First Goal for Ipswich Town
Ireland international Kasey McAteer made a significant impact in his first goal since joining Ipswich Town from Leicester City in August. The 24-year-old winger found the back of the net in the Tractor Boys’ 2-1 victory over Birmingham, boosting the second-placed side’s hopes of promotion.
Ipswich came from behind to secure a hard-fought win at Portman Road, keeping their dreams of an immediate return to the Premier League alive. The visitors took the lead through Carlos Vicente, but Ipswich responded with two crucial goals just before halftime from Ben Johnson and McAteer.
The match started with Ipswich creating an early chance when McAteer shot just over the bar after receiving a pass from Marcelino Nunez. Referee Adam Herczeg turned down a penalty appeal after Jacob Greaves appeared to be grappled by Jonathan Panzo following a corner.
Birmingham opened the scoring in the 32nd minute through Vicente, who capitalized on a cross from Jay Stansfield. However, Ipswich equalized shortly before halftime through Johnson, who converted a cross from Furlong despite the goalkeeper’s best efforts.
McAteer then put Ipswich ahead four minutes later with his first goal for the club, firing under Beadle after a great build-up play between Jack Clarke and George Hirst.
In the second half, McAteer had another opportunity to extend the lead, but his shot went wide of the post. Birmingham had a chance to level the score in the 70th minute, but the goal was disallowed due to the ball being out of play before crossing the line.
Ipswich held on to their lead, with goalkeeper Christian Walton making a crucial save to deny Birmingham’s Ibrahim Osman. O’Shea also denied Ethan Laird from the rebound, ensuring the three points for the hosts.
