Irfan Pathan: Pant’s 4-Hour Prep for IPL 2026 LSG Campaign

Pant’s Powerplay Push: Yuvraj Singh’s Mental Game Focus Ahead of IPL 2026

Rishabh Pant, the highly-touted captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, is reportedly undergoing intensive preparation for the upcoming IPL 2026 season, with a particular focus on mental conditioning under the guidance of former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh. This renewed focus comes at a critical juncture for Pant, who faced a challenging IPL 2025 campaign where he captained the league’s most expensive player.

Pant’s recent form in white-ball cricket has seen a noticeable dip, leading to his role as a secondary wicketkeeper in the ODI setup, with limited appearances over the last three and a half years. His position in India’s T20I squad also shifted following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Yuvraj Singh, known for his mentorship of emerging talents like Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma, has recently dedicated time to working with Pant, aiming to reignite his signature aggressive style of play.

Strategic Batting Order and Mental Fortitude

According to insights shared by former India cricketer Irfan Pathan, a key aspect of Pant’s preparation with Yuvraj Singh has been on the mental side of the game, rather than purely technical adjustments. Pathan revealed that Yuvraj Singh spent significant time, dedicating three to four-hour sessions, engaging in conversations with Pant.

“It is very important that Rishabh Pant gets to bat during the powerplay,” Pathan commented on his YouTube channel. “Nicholas Pooran has batted at No.3 for them, but Rishabh Pant must be locked in batting at No.3 so that he gets to bat in the powerplay. So, I believe that just lock it. After he worked with Yuvraj Singh, I spoke to Yuvi, and Yuvi told me that more than technical aspects, he worked with Rishabh on the mental side of the game. 3-4 hour sessions were dedicated to just talking.”

This emphasis on the mental game suggests a strategy to alleviate the pressure Pant has reportedly felt, encouraging him to play with the freedom and enjoyment that has characterised his best performances.

Addressing Captaincy and Performance Concerns

The IPL 2025 season presented significant challenges for Pant, both in his batting and his captaincy. He was frequently observed in animated discussions and intense on-field exchanges, which did not appear to benefit either his personal performance or the team’s overall cohesion. His leadership abilities even drew questions from opposition figures like Faf du Plessis. However, Pathan remains confident in Pant’s inherent capabilities, believing he possesses the talent to live up to his reputation.

“There will be a lot of responsibility on Rishabh Pant,” Pathan stated. “We will have to see what he does to get this team qualified. Whatever I have seen of him so far, he looks to be more fit and focused. He has spent 4-5 days with Yuvraj Singh as well. Now we will have to see how he brings those learnings onto the field. He always seemed to be under pressure last year. It seemed that he was not enjoying cricket. He needs to enjoy cricket.”

A Proven Track Record in the IPL

Despite the recent struggles, Pant’s historical performance in the Indian Premier League remains a testament to his calibre. His statistics showcase a strong track record within the league, with an average of 34 and a strike rate hovering around 150, amassing over 3500 runs. This statistical evidence underscores his proven ability to dominate and deliver match-winning performances.

“Rishabh Pant has done well in this league, he has an average of 34 and a strike rate of around 150, and scored 3500 runs. This shows that you have shown your dominance in this league. The performances are there, match-winning innings are there, but it has to be taken further,” he added.

The focus on mental resilience and a clear batting role, coupled with Yuvraj Singh’s experienced guidance, signals a concerted effort to help Rishabh Pant rediscover his explosive form and lead the Lucknow Super Giants to success in IPL 2026. The coming season will be a key indicator of whether this strategic shift can translate into sustained on-field dominance and renewed enjoyment for the dynamic wicketkeeper-batsman.
