Jaguar Land Rover Design Chief Departs

Gerry McGovern Departs JLR After Two Decades, Leaving an “Indelible Stamp”

The long-speculated departure of Gerry McGovern, the influential design chief at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), is now official. A memo circulated to JLR employees on Friday confirmed that McGovern will be stepping down from his role at the end of March, concluding a remarkable two-decade tenure with the British automaker.

In his farewell message, McGovern expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to have shaped the design language of Jaguar and Land Rover. He described his time at the company as a “great privilege” and conveyed immense pride in the collective achievements during his leadership. McGovern also extended his thanks to the Tata family, the owners of JLR, for the opportunities afforded to him. Upon his exit, McGovern intends to establish his own design consultancy.

PB Balaji, who assumed the position of JLR CEO in early November 2025, acknowledged McGovern’s “significant contribution” to the company. Balaji lauded McGovern’s “creative leadership, vision, drive and passion,” stating that these qualities have “left an indelible stamp on our brands.”

The announcement brings a close to a months-long period of uncertainty surrounding McGovern’s future at JLR. The saga began in early December 2025 with reports suggesting McGovern had been terminated and escorted from the premises. Despite these initial claims, McGovern remained listed on the company’s website as its Chief Creative Officer and a board member. At the time, neither JLR nor McGovern’s representatives offered official comment, and attempts to reach them for statements were unsuccessful.

It wasn’t until mid-December that a JLR spokesperson addressed the rumours, labelling the reports as “untrue.” However, the spokesperson notably declined to confirm whether McGovern was still employed by the automaker, further fuelling speculation. While McGovern’s departure is now confirmed, the exact events that transpired in December and the specific reasons for his exit remain undisclosed.

A Storied Career in Automotive Design

Gerry McGovern’s journey in the automotive design world is a testament to his talent and vision. He began his career at Chrysler after completing his studies at the prestigious Royal College of Art. His early career also saw him gain valuable experience at Peugeot and Rover before moving to Ford.

At Ford, McGovern worked within the Lincoln Mercury division before taking on the role of head of advanced design at Land Rover. He remained with the British marque even after Ford divested Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors in 2008. McGovern steadily climbed the ranks, eventually becoming Land Rover’s chief designer before being appointed as Jaguar Land Rover’s Chief Creative Officer in 2020.

In his capacity as Chief Creative Officer, McGovern was the public face of significant design initiatives. Notably, he fronted the global media reveal of the Jaguar Type 00 concept at the close of 2024. This bold and forward-thinking concept showcased Jaguar’s new design philosophy, a pivotal shift aimed at repositioning the brand to compete with luxury marques like Bentley, moving away from its previous focus on BMW.

Navigating a Complex Legacy

The period of speculation surrounding McGovern’s exit has also brought to light accounts from former employees who described his management style. These individuals, speaking anonymously to Hagerty, characterised McGovern as an autocratic leader with a significant ego, prone to outbursts over perceived imperfections, from misaligned badges to minor issues in the clay modelling studio.

This reported management approach is said to have fostered a challenging and tense atmosphere within the design department, contributing to a high staff turnover. While these accounts paint a picture of a demanding leader, they also underscore the intense dedication and high standards McGovern held for the design output of Jaguar and Land Rover.

As Gerry McGovern embarks on his next chapter, his influence on the aesthetic identity of Jaguar and Land Rover over the past two decades is undeniable. His departure marks the end of an era for the British automaker, leaving a significant void in its design leadership and prompting a re-evaluation of its creative direction moving forward. The impact of his vision, however, will continue to be seen in the vehicles that bear the Jaguar and Land Rover badges for years to come.
