Jake Trbojevic set for comeback after head injury

Injury Setback for Manly’s Jake Trbojevic

Manly forward Jake Trbojevic is facing another injury challenge after fracturing his cheekbone during a tackle in Friday night’s victory over the St George Illawarra Dragons. Despite the setback, Trbojevic remains optimistic about making a return to the field this week against the North Queensland Cowboys.

The incident occurred during a crucial moment in the match, leading to immediate swelling that temporarily impaired Trbojevic’s vision. However, he quickly downplayed concerns, particularly regarding potential concussion. “It didn’t hurt, I wasn’t concussed, which was the main thing, but it closed up so quickly that I could no longer see,” Trbojevic said on Sunday.

He added, “I did it making a tackle. It’s slowly opening today. I still look absolutely glamorous. But I’ll be all good for Thursday. I’m honestly fine. If I could open my eyes, I would have kept playing the other night.”

Trbojevic’s absence from a head injury assessment (HIA) is a relief, especially considering his history of head injuries, which has raised ongoing concerns about his long-term health. Although this latest injury is facial rather than neurological, it adds to the broader discussion about his durability and ability to continue performing at a high level.

Future Plans and Commitment to Manly

Off the field, Trbojevic also addressed speculation about his future with the club, including reports of a round 10 deadline related to a 2027 contract option. He dismissed any immediate pressure to make a decision, reaffirming his deep connection to the Manly Sea Eagles and his desire to play for the next 12 months.

“’Foz’ was such a great competitor and leader as a player; he was such a passionate person, and all of those qualities have rubbed off on the playing group,” Trbojevic said. “Winning definitely helps everything. Hopefully, we can keep building on the last couple of games.”

He emphasized his commitment to the club, stating, “I love Manly, I want to play for Manly and whoever the coach is [moving forward] won’t worry me too much. I just want to make sure I can keep offering my best self – I want to keep playing to the level that is acceptable. That’s what I’ll base my decision on. There’s no real deadline. There’s a certain respect from both sides.”

Trbojevic noted that while the decision is still early, continued improvement could make his choice easier. “It’s a lot more enjoyable when you’re winning. But I don’t want to get ahead of myself. I know it’s only been a couple of wins, and it’s still early in the year. We just need to keep building. I’m only worried about Thursday. I only have one eye on the Cowboys.”

Focus on Upcoming Match

With the focus now shifting to a short turnaround clash against the North Queensland Cowboys, Trbojevic is determined to play his part—despite the challenges of playing with one eye. Manly are aiming to secure their third win of the season, maintaining new coach Kieran Foran’s perfect record at the helm.

Trbojevic’s resilience and determination highlight his commitment to the team and his ability to overcome adversity. As he prepares for the upcoming match, fans will be watching closely to see if he can deliver another strong performance despite the recent injury. His presence on the field continues to be a key factor in the team’s success, and his leadership remains invaluable to the Manly Sea Eagles.
