Jayawardene subtly targets Delhi Capitals ahead of MI vs DC clash in IPL 2026

Mumbai Indians’ Recent Struggles and Optimistic Outlook

Mumbai Indians, one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL), has secured five titles to date, matching the record held by Chennai Super Kings. However, the team has faced a challenging period in recent years, having not lifted the trophy since their 2020 victory. Over the past four seasons, they have struggled to maintain their previous level of performance.

In the last few years, Mumbai Indians have failed to qualify for the playoffs on two occasions. Out of the last five seasons, only two times have they managed to reach the playoff stage. Additionally, they finished at the bottom of the points table in 2022 and 2024. Despite these setbacks, head coach Mahela Jayawardene remains confident in the team’s abilities.

Jayawardene shared his thoughts with reporters ahead of an upcoming match:

“10 teams makes it even harder competition. But I think in the last 5 years, we were in the playoffs 2 or 3 times, if I am not mistaken. So that means we had our opportunities in just that last bit. I don’t know how to answer this properly. In a competition like this, you have to take one game at a time and go through the process. As a team, we know that we have done well consistently over a period of time.”

He also highlighted that some teams have never won the IPL title, such as Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Lucknow Super Giants. Jayawardene emphasized the importance of maintaining the team’s process and continuing to play good cricket.

“We just need to continue to trust that process and keep playing good cricket. And we will get there. And how we have been successful is by doing the same thing. So I don’t see why we need to do something different. But as long as we keep pushing ourselves to the limit in every game and have the same attitude on and off the field to be a better team, a better franchise.”

He added:

“I think the results will take care of themselves. Rather than putting ourselves under pressure at the beginning of the season. Saying we haven’t won it for 4 years. But some teams haven’t won it forever either. So we are not rubbing it in. But with all due respect, we just thought that we would trust our process. And work on ourselves on how we need to go about it.”

A Promising Start to IPL 2026

After a disappointing couple of seasons, Mumbai Indians have started the IPL 2026 on a high note. For the first time in 13 years, the team managed to win their opening encounter of the tournament, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium on March 29.

Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton contributed with half-centuries to chase down a daunting target of 221 runs with five balls to spare. This victory has undoubtedly boosted the morale of the entire squad.

Following the loss of their captain to a mid-season switch in 2024 when Hardik Pandya took over from Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians have made a strong start to the 2026 season.

A Strong Lineup for the Upcoming Season

With a lineup that includes notable players such as Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Tilak Varma, Mumbai Indians look like a formidable side. The team is determined to make a deep run in the tournament this season.

Mumbai Indians’ next game is against Delhi Capitals on Saturday, April 4, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. This match will be a crucial test for the team as they aim to build on their early success and regain their position as one of the top contenders in the IPL.
