Jaylen Carey’s Decision to Enter the Transfer Portal
Jaylen Carey has made the decision to enter the transfer portal, marking his departure from the Tennessee basketball team after just one season with the Vols. He shared this news on Instagram, signaling a new chapter in his collegiate career. Carey is set to play for his fourth school in four years once he finds a new program. His journey began at James Madison University, followed by a stint at Vanderbilt, and then the 2025-26 season at Tennessee.
During his time with the Vols, Carey averaged 7.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. He played in 27 games, starting eight of them. His performance included 103 offensive rebounds, which ranks as the fourth-most in a single season in program history. This impressive stat highlights his impact on the court, especially in critical moments.
Carey is the fifth Vol to enter the transfer portal this season. The previous four players who have done so include forwards Cade Phillips and J.P. Estrella, along with guards Bishop Boswell and Clarence Massamba. Boswell started 33 games, Estrella started 13, and Phillips started nine of 10 games before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury. With Carey, Estrella, and Phillips leaving, the Vols have lost four of their five post players.
Felix Okpara was a senior last season, while DeWayne Brown remains the only player who has not announced his plans following the season. This leaves the team with some uncertainty as they look to rebuild for the upcoming season.
Carey’s standout performance came in Tennessee’s Sweet 16 win against Iowa State, where he recorded an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double. This game was one of his best of the season, showcasing his ability to step up when it matters most.
His college career began at James Madison University under coach Mark Byington, whom he followed to Vanderbilt. At James Madison, Carey played in all 36 games off the bench as a freshman, averaging 7.0 points and 4.3 rebounds in 14.9 minutes. He shot 66.9% from the field and 30% from 3-point range, demonstrating his efficiency and potential.
At Vanderbilt, Carey averaged 8.0 points and 5.7 rebounds in 33 games, including one start during his lone season with the team. His consistent performance across different programs highlights his adaptability and dedication to the sport.
As Carey moves forward in his career, fans and analysts alike will be watching to see where he ends up and how he continues to develop as a player. His experience and skills make him a valuable asset to any program that welcomes him.
