Jessica Simpson’s Awkward Encounter with Ex-Nick Lachey 20 Years After Divorce

A Surprising Encounter on a Hawaiian Flight

In an unexpected twist, Jessica Simpson and her first ex-husband Nick Lachey found themselves on the same flight from Los Angeles to Kauai on March 29. The encounter left both of them visibly uncomfortable, according to reports.

The 45-year-old clothing mogul and the 52-year-old Grammy nominee were reportedly traveling with their respective partners. Simpson was accompanied by her second estranged husband, Eric Johnson, and his second wife, Vanessa Minnillo, along with their three children. Lachey, on the other hand, was seen with his current wife, who is also part of the group.

Simpson allegedly switched seats with someone in her group to create some distance from Lachey, who reportedly turned bright red upon seeing her. This awkward moment occurred at 30,000 feet in the air, highlighting the tension between the former couple.

A Nostalgic Return to Hawaii

Last Thursday, Simpson shared a seaside snap of herself basking under the full moon in Hawaii with a caption that read, “I see you and I’m fired up!” This post sparked interest among fans and media alike, as it hinted at a possible return to the islands for the fashion icon.

Although there have been no official statements from either party, the Daily Mail has reached out to the representatives of Simpson and Lachey. The pair’s three-year marriage ended in 2006, and since then, they have each gone on to build new lives.

A History of Fame and Collaboration

The 98 Degrees boybander and the early aughts pop star met through their manager in 1998. They split for five months in 2001, and Simpson remained a virgin until their 2002 wedding night. Lachey even appeared in Simpson’s song “Where You Are” in 2000, and he served as a video hunk in her 2003 music video for “Sweetest Sin.”

Their rise to fame came after launching the MTV reality show “Newlyweds” (2003-2005) and a subsequent special, “The Nick and Jessica Variety Hour.” As recently as January, Simpson cashed in on her 2003 viral moment from “Newlyweds,” where she pondered over a can of Chicken of the Sea tuna: “Is this chicken what I have or is it fish?”

A New Chapter in Life

Simpson and Lachey previously crossed paths at various events, including the 2006 MTV VMAs, the 2006 Teen Choice Awards, and the 2010 Golden Globe Awards. However, since their divorce, they have taken separate paths.

The founder of the Jessica Simpson Collection filed for divorce from Johnson following a decade of marriage in January 2025. On May 1, Simpson and the 46-year-old retired NFL tight end will celebrate the 14th birthday of their daughter Maxwell, and they are also co-parenting 12-year-old son Ace and seven-year-old daughter Birdie.

New Relationships and Future Plans

Since January, Simpson has reportedly been dating Nashville-based musician and sound engineer Thomas Eisenhood, who is 12 years younger than her. This new relationship adds another layer to her personal life.

Simpson is scheduled to kick off her four-date spring tour at Hard Rock Live in Tulsa, OK on May 23. Meanwhile, the Lacheys have welcomed three children – son Camden, 13, daughter Brooklyn, 11, and son Phoenix, nine – during their 14-year marriage.

Lachey will next appear in Investigation Discovery’s four-part docuseries “Boy Band Confidential,” which premieres April 13. The series was produced by NSYNC’s Joey Fatone, adding to the legacy of the boy band era.
