That is mind-boggling in its own way. Why would they do it?”
Schapiro also criticized Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, for not taking stronger action earlier. He argued that while banning Kanye West may appear as a symbolic gesture, it does little to address the broader issue of antisemitism in the UK. “Banning Kanye West is the easy bit. It’s going to make [Starmer] famous for five minutes,” he said. “If you really want to deal with antisemitism, there is plenty more you could do.”

According to Schapiro, the responsibility for the controversy does not rest solely with Kanye West. “The question starts with the organisers,” he said. “They are not dumb. They know that this is a Jewish area—why are you inviting someone like that?” He further questioned why authorities had not intervened earlier, suggesting that more proactive measures should have been taken to prevent the situation from escalating.
West has faced significant backlash in recent years over a series of antisemitic remarks. These comments have led to public criticism and commercial consequences, including the withdrawal of support from some brands and collaborators.

He also rejected the argument that West’s past behavior should be viewed through the lens of mental health. “Being a mental disorder doesn’t justify anything,” he stated. However, Schapiro acknowledged that the possibility of redemption exists if genuine steps are taken. “The concept of a second chance does exist, but he needs to show genuinely and sincerely that he wants that second chance. So far, he hasn’t shown that.”

The incident has also raised questions about the responsibility of major festivals in selecting the artists they platform. Schapiro emphasized the importance of due diligence, stating: “Bringing someone on stage without proper due diligence is just a recipe for disaster.”
