The enduring fascination with John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s whirlwind romance and tragic end continues to captivate the public, fueled by recent portrayals in media like FX’s limited series, “Love Story.” Their passionate, yet tumultuous, relationship, constantly under the harsh glare of tabloid scrutiny, culminated in a devastating plane crash on July 16, 1999. Kennedy, piloting the aircraft, along with Bessette and her sister, were en route to a wedding when their plane went down off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, claiming all three lives. Despite the somber conclusion, the public’s intrigue surrounding the couple, including persistent rumors of infidelity, has shown no signs of waning.
Allegations of Affairs: A Tangled Web
The narrative surrounding John and Carolyn’s marriage is often complicated by claims of extramarital affairs on both sides. One prominent voice in this recounting is Sybil Hill, who, in 2010, publicly detailed her alleged affair with the younger Kennedy. Hill asserted that their connection began as early as 1991, predating his relationship with Bessette, and surprisingly, continued even after their marriage.
The Alleged Beginning: According to Hill, her encounter with Kennedy occurred during a date with another individual. She claims that John Kennedy Jr. approached her, offered his phone number, and this exchange ultimately led to them dating.
Continued Encounters: Hill’s account further suggests that the affair persisted into 1998, a period when Kennedy and Bessette were reportedly experiencing marital difficulties. During this time, Hill also recalled an incident where Bessette allegedly posed as a reporter and contacted her.
“She asked me, ‘Are you dating John Kennedy?’ I said ‘no’ and she hung up,” Hill shared, recounting the tense conversation. “Her tone was so angry that I think it was Carolyn.”
Following this alleged confrontation, Hill stated that she was unable to re-establish contact with Kennedy.
Carolyn Bessette’s Alleged Infidelity
The whispers of infidelity did not solely surround John F. Kennedy Jr.; Carolyn Bessette was also accused of straying during their relationship. Model Michael Bergin has come forward with his own account of a past connection with Bessette, providing details that have contributed to the complex portrait of their marriage.
Bergin’s Account: Bergin’s perspective was notably featured in Edward Klein’s 2003 book, “The Kennedy Curse: Why The Tragedy Has Haunted America’s First Family for 50 Years.” In his statements, Bergin described a profound connection with Bessette.
“Carolyn and I had a very intense love for each other. We were inseparable for a couple of years,” Bergin stated. “And I know deep in my heart that she still loved me even after she married … Some things just don’t end.”
Bergin’s manager, Clifford Streit, corroborated the existence of their affair, adding that Bergin was ultimately the one to end it out of respect for Bessette’s marriage vows. Streit characterized Bergin as a man with a “strangely decent” nature, who was “respectful of marriage vows.”

A Defense of Bessette’s Character: Bergin later published his own book in 2004, titled “The Other Man: A Love Story.” He explained that his decision to write the book stemmed from his perception that Klein’s portrayal of Bessette was unfairly negative and sensationalized.
“I knew her very well,” Bergin shared, expressing his dismay at the characterizations. “[Klein’s book] just caused this whirlwind of stories saying that she’s just a horrible monster, that she’s a coke addict, she’s this and she’s that. And I knew her very well. And she’s not any of that. The whole book was all lies. I had to do something.”
The enduring interest in John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s lives, even decades after their deaths, underscores the lasting impact of their story. The combination of their privileged background, undeniable charisma, and a tragically short, yet intensely scrutinized, romance continues to fuel public fascination and debate, with allegations of infidelity adding further layers to their complex and ultimately heartbreaking narrative.
