John Nolan, actor from Batman and Person of Interest, passes away at 87

Remembering John Nolan: A Versatile Actor and Beloved Family Member

John Nolan, a British actor known for his roles in Batman and Person of Interest, has passed away at the age of 87. His death was reported by the British outlet Stratford-Upon-Avon Herald, though the cause of death remains undisclosed.

Nolan’s wife, actress Kim Hartman, shared heartfelt memories of her husband with the outlet, describing him as “a free spirit, who always knew what he wanted and acted on his own terms; the only truly original thinker I think I ever knew.” She added that he was “articulate, intelligent, and with an anarchic wit,” always willing to see both sides of an argument.

“He was also the kindest person I ever knew – and animals loved him too!” Hartman continued. “John was a popular and talented teacher, whether explaining a Shakespeare soliloquy or how to swing a golf club, and was devoted to his family.”

A Legacy in Film and Television

John Nolan was the uncle of acclaimed director Christopher Nolan and screenwriter and producer Jonathan Nolan. Following his uncle’s passing, Christopher shared a touching statement with The Independent. He said:

“My uncle John was the first artist I knew, and he taught me more than anyone about the search for truth in acting and the joys of creative achievement. I miss him terribly, but take great comfort in my memories of John, particularly those of working together.”

One of the late actor’s most notable roles was in his nephew Jonathan’s series Person of Interest, where he played MI6 agent John Greer, the villain of the second season. He also contributed behind-the-scenes to over two dozen episodes of the show.

Nolan supported his nephew Christopher’s projects as well. His most recognized role was as Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks in Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). He also appeared in Christopher’s 1998 film Following and 2017’s Dunkirk.

A Career Rooted in Theatre and Television

Nolan began his career as a theatre actor, studying at the Drama Centre in London and the Royal Shakespeare Company before landing his first major role as the titular character in BBC’s Daniel Deronda miniseries in 1970.

He later starred in BBC’s Doomwatch as scientist Geoff Hardcastle and as Nick Faunt in the 1973 ITV miniseries Shabby Tiger. His most recent credited role was in an episode of Dune: Prophecy in 2024.

A Life Filled with Love and Creativity

Nolan is survived by his wife, Hartman, their children Miranda and Tom, and two grandchildren. Throughout his life, he was known not only for his talent but also for his kindness and dedication to his family.

His legacy continues through the many films and television shows he contributed to, as well as the memories he left behind with those who knew him.
