John Nolan, a respected actor and the uncle of renowned director Christopher Nolan and producer Jonathan Nolan, has passed away at the age of 87. His death was first announced by the Stratford-upon-Avon Herald on Saturday.
In a heartfelt statement shared with The Independent, Christopher Nolan expressed his deep admiration for his uncle: “My uncle John was the first artist I knew, and he taught me more than anyone about the search for truth in acting and the joys of creative achievement. I miss him terribly, but take great comfort in my memories of John, particularly those of working together.”
Nolan’s career spanned several decades, with notable roles in films and television. He first appeared in the 2005 film Batman Begins, where he played Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks. He later reprised his role in the 2012 film The Dark Knight Rises, which was co-written by Jonathan Nolan and directed by Christopher.
His collaboration with Christopher began earlier, when he appeared in the 1998 film Following, the directorial debut of his nephew. Nolan’s final work with his director nephew was in the 2017 film Dunkirk. His last project with Jonathan was the CBS series Person of Interest, which the producer created and executive-produced.
Born in Kent, England, in 1938, Nolan started his career on stage, performing with companies such as the Richmond Theater, Royal Court Company, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. In 1970, he played the title role in the miniseries Daniel Deronda and later appeared in the second season of the sci-fi show Doomwatch. Three years later, he portrayed Nick Faunt in all seven episodes of Shabby Tiger.
Other film credits include Terror and The World Is Full of Married Men. On television, he appeared in Return of the Saint, Crown Court, Enemy at the Door, Masterpiece, Silent Witness, and Dune: Prophecy, which marked the end of his acting career.
During the early days of his stage career, while working on a production of Romeo and Juliet, Nolan met actor Kim Hartman. The two married in 1975 and had two children, Tom and Miranda.
Fans have taken to social media to express their condolences. One fan wrote, “Such a shame. I loved him in Person of Interest so much,” while another added, “He was great in Person of Interest. Condolences to the Nolan family. RIP.” Another fan commented, “Rest in peace. He was PHENOMENAL in Following even though he had an extremely brief role,” and someone else said, “Sad loss. John Nolan had a long, memorable career. RIP.”
In addition to his wife and two children, Nolan is survived by two grandchildren.
