Keoghan’s Brando Gift: A Peaky Blinders Surprise

A Father’s Legacy: Barry Keoghan’s Special Tribute to His Son from the Set of Peaky Blinders

The highly anticipated Peaky Blinders film has thrust the complex dynamics of father-son relationships into the spotlight. For Barry Keoghan, who portrays the illegitimate son Duke Shelby, the experience resonated so deeply that it inspired a unique and heartfelt gift for his own real-life child.

Keoghan’s character, Duke Shelby, is pivotal in the film, stepping into the formidable shoes of Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby as the next leader of the notorious gang. Now that the movie has finally hit screens, Keoghan has shared a personal anecdote about a particular line that left a lasting impression on him. This memorable phrase has been etched onto a special keepsake he created for his three-year-old son, Brando.

During a conversation with Cillian Murphy, Keoghan revealed the thoughtful gesture. “I actually went then and got me and my son two crowns,” he explained. “I actually took a line from the movie and got it engraved.”

The line that struck a chord with Keoghan was delivered by actress Rebecca Ferguson, who plays Kaulo Chiriklo. Kaulo is the twin sister of Zelda, Duke’s mother, in the film. The powerful dialogue, spoken by Kaulo to Duke, carries significant weight within the narrative.

“Rom Baro, the Gypsy king, that is what your mother always wanted for you,” Kaulo says to Duke in a poignant scene.

Keoghan elaborated on the profound meaning behind this statement. “‘Rom Baro,’ which is Gypsy king,” he told Murphy, “and I got that engraved on Brando’s one and my one [crown].”

While the sentiment is undeniably touching, Keoghan admitted with a chuckle that his son doesn’t yet get to wear his crown. “As Brando is still only little, I don’t let him wear it as it’s very, very expensive and he will try and break it. But that moment, that line, stuck with me.”

This personal connection to the father-son theme isn’t new for Keoghan. He has previously spoken candidly about how the absence of his own father profoundly influenced his portrayal of Duke Shelby.

In an interview with RTÉ’s David McCullagh, Keoghan shared his perspective: “It was such an emotional piece, being a dad myself and having a father who was absent, I can entirely relate to that.” He believes this universal experience of paternal absence is something audiences will connect with. “I think that’s what people are going to relate to. It’s a universal thing.”

Keoghan further emphasised the enduring appeal of the Peaky Blinders franchise, noting that the series and the new film are fundamentally built around core themes. “The movie and series, as Barry points out, have ‘family at the core and loyalty, and I think this movie really dives into that and shows these characters, like even Tommy Shelby, in a different place.'” This exploration of family, loyalty, and the evolution of characters promises a compelling watch for fans.
