Kieran Foran’s New Test After Contender’s Bold Move at Manly

Kieran Foran Faces New Challenge in Manly Coaching Race

Interim Manly coach Kieran Foran is navigating a new challenge in his quest to secure the head coaching position at the club. A key contender for the role has recently highlighted their credentials, drawing attention to the ongoing debate about who should lead the Sea Eagles. Foran’s first game in charge, which saw Manly defeat the Dolphins 52-18, sparked discussions about whether the club should appoint him as the permanent head coach.

Foran took over as interim coach after replacing Anthony Seibold, who was dismissed by Manly officials. The decision came just three games into Foran’s assistant role under Seibold. While the change energized the team and secured their first win of the NRL season, it remains a bold move for Manly bosses to hand the head coaching role to an inexperienced figure like Foran.

Among the other potential candidates for the top job is Matt Ballin, a fellow Manly legend and two-time premiership winner. Ballin is seen as a strong favorite for the role after gaining experience as an assistant coach at the Broncos and under Billy Slater with the Maroons. Another name linked to the Manly position is Michael Ennis, who previously worked with the Sea Eagles and is now under Shane Flanagan at the Dragons.

Brad Arthur Makes Strong Case for Manly Role

Leeds coach Brad Arthur is also making a compelling case for the Manly position. After taking over at Leeds just 18 months ago, Arthur has led the Rhinos to the top of the English Super League ladder. Their recent victory over fierce rivals Bradford marked their fifth win in the first seven games of the season. This performance has placed them at the top of the standings on points differential, tied with Wigan and St Helens.

Arthur missed out on the opportunity to coach PNG when Willie Peters was chosen as the inaugural coach of the Chiefs for the 2028 NRL season. However, he is still considered a strong candidate for a return to the NRL. The former Parramatta coach has remained committed to Leeds but has expressed a desire to return to Australia. He recently set a deadline of June 30 this year to decide his future.

Manly Looking for Someone with ‘Manly DNA’

Sea Eagles officials have emphasized that they are seeking someone with “Manly DNA” to lead the club. Among the four main candidates, each has some connection to the club. Foran will be given every opportunity to prove himself before the search for a new head coach begins in earnest.

Arthur’s success at Leeds and his record of transforming a struggling Eels side into NRL grand finalists in 2022 make him a compelling option for the Sea Eagles. Even if he does not land the Manly job, the veteran coach would likely be among the top names considered for any future NRL coaching vacancies.

Pressure on Other Coaches

Meanwhile, Dragons coach Shane Flanagan is facing increasing pressure to end the club’s eight-game losing streak. On the other hand, Cowboys coach Todd Payten has eased some of the scrutiny around his future after helping North Queensland secure back-to-back wins.
