The Impact of Cameron Green’s Injury on Kolkata Knight Riders
The ongoing situation regarding Cameron Green’s ability to bowl again after his injury has created significant challenges for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their IPL 2026 season. Green, who was expected to be a key player for the team, had the potential to make a major impact. With three to four pace-bowling options available for their upcoming match, KKR was hoping to bounce back after losing their first two games in the tournament.
Green, an Australian all-rounder, was signed by KKR for a staggering INR 25.2 crore at the auction. However, Cricket Australia has declared him unfit to bowl, leading to some controversy. This decision involved KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane, and the team’s bowling coach, Tim Southee, has provided updates on Green’s progress.
Cameron Green, primarily known as a batting all-rounder for Australia, has bowled in T20 leagues and international matches. He has delivered 439 balls in the IPL for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Mumbai Indians, but he hasn’t bowled frequently during these matches, taking 16 wickets at an economy rate of 9.07.
Despite his height of 6ft 4 inches, which allows him to bowl effectively, Green’s bowling has not had a significant impact on batters. He will miss KKR’s matches due to a minor lower back injury sustained during the T20 World Cup 2026 earlier this year.
Cricket Australia has advised Green to take time off to recover, with the focus on rebuilding his bowling capacity through a rest period. The team has been cautious with his handling, as he has not participated in any bowling activities throughout the tournament.
“Green’s been bowling well, tracking his rehab and getting himself back to being able to bowl in games. He’ll continue to do that,” said Southee.
Progress in Rehabilitation
The team management announced that Green has started bowling in the nets after their latest update to the public. Southee reported on Sunday that Green’s rehabilitation process is advancing successfully as he progresses toward match-ready bowling skills.
His update hinted at a possible return with the ball against Punjab Kings, although it still looks unlikely that Green will bowl in that match. Southee confirmed that KKR maintains ongoing communication with Cricket Australia to monitor Green’s recovery progress.
Challenges in Bowling Performance
Kolkata’s bowling performance has suffered during Cameron Green’s absence because their young fast bowlers face difficulties when their main bowlers are not available. The unit, led by Blessing Muzarabani and Vaibhav Arora, has faced several challenges, including a heavy 65-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 2.
The team currently faces serious problems with their Powerplay bowling according to Southee, who mentioned this issue during his assessment of the team’s performance in IPL 2026.
“It’s always hard when you’re not taking wickets, particularly in the powerplay. Taking wickets early stems the run flow and makes things easier. We haven’t quite managed to do that so far, but we’ll plan accordingly and hopefully take those early wickets,” Southee added.
Looking Ahead
The Kolkata team needs to recover from their recent defeats because they will compete against Punjab Kings on April 6 at Eden Gardens, which will begin the match at 7:30 PM IST. The team is under pressure to improve their performance, especially in the Powerplay, to secure better results in the remaining matches of the tournament.
