KKR’s Cameron Green in doubt? Former India star questions his role after SRH defeat

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have faced a challenging start to the IPL 2026 season, losing their first two matches against Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad. These defeats have sparked questions about the team’s selection strategy, with former India spinner Harbhajan Singh making a bold statement regarding the role of Cameron Green in the squad.

Green, who was signed by KKR for a hefty price of 25 crores during the auction, was expected to be an all-rounder. However, due to a lower back injury, Cricket Australia has restricted him from bowling. As a result, Green has only batted in the team’s first two games, scoring 18 and 2 respectively. This lack of contribution has raised concerns about his impact on the team.

Harbhajan has questioned whether Green deserves a spot in the lineup if he is not contributing with the ball. He argued that there are better batting options available within the team. On his YouTube channel, Harbhajan stated:

“I feel that Cameron Green doesn’t fit in this team, and the simple reason is that he isn’t bowling. The team should bring in Tim Seifert and have him open the innings, because if Cameron Green isn’t going to bowl, there are better options available purely as a batter. That option is Seifert. Then there’s Rovman Powell, who could also be played.”

The former Indian spinner suggested using New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman Tim Seifert as an opening partner for either Shubman Gill or Brendon McCullum. He also proposed the inclusion of Rovman Powell, citing his aggressive style of play as a potential asset for the team.

KKR’s Struggles Continue

This is not just a problem with one player; the entire KKR side has struggled in both matches. In their first game, they failed to defend a total of 220 against the Mumbai Indians. In their second match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, they leaked runs and lost by 65 runs at Eden Gardens.

This marks the first time since 2012 that KKR have lost their opening two matches. Although they went on to win the title that year, the current performance does little to inspire confidence.

Harbhajan added:

“Now suddenly KKR’s team must be feeling the pressure because they have lost both of their first two matches, one at home and one away. If they want to make a comeback from here, they need to fix a few things. First, they have been hit hard in both matches, first by Mumbai and now at home by SRH.”

Looking Ahead

KKR’s next match is against the Punjab Kings on April 6th, which will be played at Eden Gardens. After two consecutive losses, they find themselves at the bottom of the table. To have any chance of competing for the IPL title, the team needs to make significant improvements.

The management of KKR now faces difficult decisions. They must decide whether to continue backing Cameron Green or to explore other options. With the pressure mounting, the team will need to address these issues quickly if they are to turn their season around.

Key Points to Consider

  • Cameron Green’s Role: Green has not contributed with the ball, raising questions about his place in the team.
  • Alternative Options: Harbhajan suggests bringing in Tim Seifert or Rovman Powell as potential replacements.
  • Team Performance: KKR has struggled in both matches, with poor batting and bowling performances.
  • Pressure Situation: Losing two consecutive matches has put immense pressure on the team.
  • Future Matches: The upcoming game against Punjab Kings will be crucial for KKR’s chances of recovery.

With the IPL 2026 already off to a rocky start, KKR must act swiftly to regain momentum and secure their position in the tournament.
