The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to kick off this Saturday, buzzing with the energy of India’s recent T20 World Cup victory. However, the excitement is tinged with the profound sorrow of 11 fans who tragically lost their lives in a stampede during the celebrations for Virat Kohli and Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) maiden IPL title last season.
The world’s premier T20 cricket competition launches with RCB hosting Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. It was at this very venue that the jubilant scenes of Bengaluru’s first-ever IPL crown in June were overshadowed by a devastating crush outside the stadium, claiming the lives of eleven supporters, all aged between 14 and 29.
In a poignant tribute, the club, which was recently acquired by an Indian-US consortium for a staggering $1.8 billion, will permanently leave 11 seats vacant at the stadium. Players are also set to wear black armbands as a mark of respect for the departed fans.
Virat Kohli, a towering figure in cricket who has since retired from Test and T20 international cricket, led RCB to their long-awaited title on their 18th attempt. At 37 years old, he shows no signs of waning, with former India pace bowler Irfan Pathan remarking on his continued hunger. “He will be hungrier than ever, especially after lifting the IPL trophy last season,” Pathan told host broadcaster JioHotstar. “He will have the same kind of passion when he comes back this season. He will want to lift the trophy once again.”
A New Prodigy Emerges
The spotlight will also fall on an exciting new talent, teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi. Turning 15 just a day before the season commences, Suryavanshi is set to open the batting for the Rajasthan Royals. This prodigious young player recently made waves in the U19 World Cup in Harare, where he was instrumental in India’s victory. In the final against England, he smashed a record-breaking 175 runs off just 80 balls, showcasing his explosive potential.
Suryavanshi first appeared on the IPL radar last year as a 14-year-old, famously hitting a six off the very first ball he faced on his debut. A few days later, he achieved a remarkable century in just 35 balls, making it the second-fastest in IPL history.
The Rajasthan Royals management, along with fellow opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, are focused on nurturing Suryavanshi and shielding him from the intense media scrutiny that often accompanies such rapid rises. Captain Riyan Parag acknowledged the inevitable pressure, stating, “There will be hype and pressure naturally. Jaiswal is more than capable of handling that. For Vaibhav, the role will be just to go, hit, and not to worry.”
World Cup Heroes Join New Teams
India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign has unearthed several new stars who are now set to feature prominently in the IPL. Opener-wicketkeeper Sanju Samson and all-rounder Shivam Dube, both key figures in India’s victory, will be playing for the formidable five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Samson, who was deservedly named Player of the World Cup for his stellar performance – amassing 321 runs in India’s crucial final three matches to secure the title – will embark on his first season with Chennai. The legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a two-time World Cup-winning captain and now 44 years old, is expected to continue defying age in CSK’s iconic yellow jersey, batting at number seven under the leadership of skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad.
International Stars Face Delays
The start of the IPL will see a few prominent overseas stars missing due to a combination of fitness concerns and workload management. Australia’s potent pace trio – Pat Cummins (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Mitchell Starc (Delhi Capitals), and Josh Hazlewood (RCB) – will be absent from the initial stages of the tournament.
Adding to the list, England’s Ben Duckett of Delhi Capitals has opted to withdraw from the IPL to concentrate on his international commitments. This decision could potentially lead to a two-season ban from the IPL for the player.
The IPL final is currently slated for May 31st. However, due to upcoming elections in various Indian states, only the fixtures for the first two weeks of the tournament have been announced so far. Cricket fans across the nation and around the globe are eagerly awaiting the commencement of what promises to be another thrilling season of the richest cricket league in the world.
