De Pasquale Claims Thrilling Supercars Victory at Sydney Motorsport Park
In a heart-stopping finish at Sydney Motorsport Park, factory Chevrolet driver Anton De Pasquale has clinched a hard-fought victory, narrowly fending off a relentless charge from Brodie Kostecki. The win marks De Pasquale’s first in two years and ends a significant 70-race drought, a momentous occasion for both the driver and his Team18 outfit, celebrating their first win as the factory Chevrolet team in their inaugural weekend in this capacity, and their first win overall since Darwin in 2023.
The closing laps of the race were a masterclass in tyre management and strategic driving. Kostecki, on a charge, was rapidly closing the gap to De Pasquale. However, De Pasquale executed his strategy to perfection, meticulously managing his tyres to maintain just enough of a buffer, crossing the finish line a mere car length ahead of his rival.
“I think you can see the emotion. We’ve been waiting for it. It was a good day, it’s good to be back in the winner’s circle – it’s the first time for a lot of people on this car,” a visibly emotional De Pasquale commented after the race. “I knew Brodie was going to be quick – I was doing the rough calculations and I knew he was going to get to me. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t stressed, but with two to go I knew we were sweet.”
De Pasquale’s race engineer provided crucial updates on the gap, allowing the driver to constantly assess the minimum required pace to secure the win. This precise calculation proved to be the difference in a nail-biting conclusion.
A Race Defined by Safety Cars and Pit Lane Mayhem
The race began with De Pasquale and Kostecki, who qualified second, running wheel-to-wheel through the opening corners. Kostecki, despite the fierce competition, acknowledged De Pasquale’s clean racing. “We were so close off the line – he’s a really respectful racer, so kudos to him. He could have ran me off like Ryan Wood does – only joking,” Kostecki quipped, referencing a past controversial incident.
The early stages of the race were dramatically interrupted on lap 10 by the season’s first safety car. The cause was a spectacular engine failure in Andre Heimgartner’s brand-new Toyota Supra. The Kiwi driver managed to bring his car to a halt promptly, but not before a significant oil slick was visible on the track.
This safety car period triggered a flurry of pit stops, which in turn led to considerable chaos in the pit lane. The PremiAir Racing entry driven by Jayden Ojeda suffered a wheel loss, while other drivers experienced difficulties entering and exiting their pit stalls due to congestion. Adding to the drama, Broc Feeney, the winner of Friday night’s race, was handed a 15-second penalty after being released from his pit stop into the path of Aaron Cameron, resulting in further contact. The woes for Triple Eight continued as Will Brown also received a separate 15-second penalty for a pit stop infringement.
Strategic Battles and a Relentless Chase
Following the pit stop frenzy and penalties, the race settled into a strategic rhythm during the middle laps. Will Brown opted for an early pit stop to serve his penalty, a move mirrored shortly after by the race-leading Camaro of De Pasquale.
Meanwhile, Kostecki employed a different strategy, extending his middle stint with the clear intention of gaining a tyre advantage later in the race. When Kostecki finally pitted on lap 38, six laps after De Pasquale, he emerged in third place, facing a deficit of just over eight seconds to the leader. He immediately began his pursuit.
By lap 46, Kostecki had successfully overtaken last year’s Bathurst 1000 champion, Matt Payne. At this point, he was 3.4 seconds behind De Pasquale with only seven laps remaining to close the gap. The gap continued to shrink, reducing to 2.5 seconds with five laps to go and just over a second with two laps remaining. However, despite his valiant efforts, Kostecki couldn’t quite bridge the final margin, ultimately finishing half a second behind De Pasquale after 200 kilometres of intense racing.
The Supercars season will conclude its opening weekend with one final race on Sunday afternoon.
