Melbourne’s Rising Star: Kysaiah Pickett’s Transformation
Melbourne’s football team, the Demons, are experiencing a positive shift as they navigate life under new coach Steven King. Among the standout performers is Kysaiah Pickett, who has taken his game to another level, according to teammate Ed Langdon. Pickett’s recent performances have been nothing short of impressive, showcasing his growing influence in the midfield.
Pickett has enjoyed increased time in the middle of the ground, and this has translated into some of the best numbers of his career. On average, he has recorded 22.7 disposals, 4.3 clearances, and 5.3 tackles per match this season. His ability to consistently perform at such a high level has not gone unnoticed by his teammates and coaches alike.
The 24-year-old delivered a remarkable second-half performance in Melbourne’s comeback win over Carlton at the MCG last Sunday. This victory marked a strong start for the Demons, who now sit at 2-1 (win-loss) in their campaign.
Langdon praised Pickett’s development, highlighting that he is focusing more on his midfield craft and learning from the best players in the competition. “He’s certainly taken his game to another level,” Langdon said. “He’s such a terrific player and he’s focusing more and more on his midfield craft, and working out how the best midfielders in the competition go about it. And we know what he can do when he goes forward — that’s kicking goals.”
Upcoming Match: Melbourne vs Gold Coast
As the Demons prepare for their next match against the Gold Coast at the MCG on Sunday afternoon, there is a sense of anticipation among fans and players alike. The game was initially anticipated as a special occasion due to the presence of former teammate Christian Petracca, who joined the Suns during last year’s trade period after an 11-year stint with the Demons, where he helped secure the 2021 premiership.
However, Petracca will miss the match due to a hamstring injury, which removes one of the main attractions of the encounter. Langdon expressed his disappointment but also acknowledged that Petracca’s absence might be beneficial for the Demons. “It’s a shame. It would’ve been great to play against Christian,” Langdon said. “But he’s had an unbelievable start to the year, so it might benefit us that he’s actually not playing.”
Team News and Injuries
The Demons have made several changes to their lineup for the upcoming match. Daniel Turner and veteran forward Jake Melksham have been recalled, while Changkuoth Jiath (calf) and Paddy Cross (thumb) are ruled out due to injuries. On the other side, the Suns are missing Petracca and suspended forward Bailey Humphrey.
Despite these challenges, the Suns have welcomed back Brownlow Medal winner Matt Rowell from injury, who will bolster their midfield. This return adds an extra layer of excitement to the match as both teams look to gain momentum in the season.
