Production Chaos: Sophie Turner’s Back Injury Halts £100 Million Lara Croft Series
Filming for Amazon Prime’s highly anticipated Lara Croft television adaptation, a mammoth £100 million production, has reportedly been thrown into disarray following a serious back injury sustained by its lead actress, Sophie Turner. Reports indicate that production at Shepperton Studios has been suspended for an entire month as the 30-year-old Game of Thrones star grapples with an aggravated pre-existing condition. Concerns are mounting that Turner’s recovery could take as long as six months, casting a significant shadow over the entire project.
Turner, who follows in the iconic footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander in embodying the adventurous archaeologist, has reportedly been undergoing rigorous stunt training for over a year in preparation for the demanding role. With a substantial portion of the reboot already captured on film, producers are reportedly facing a significant dilemma. Replacing Turner at this late stage is considered an incredibly challenging, if not insurmountable, task given the extensive filming already completed.
A source close to the production described the situation as “chaos on set,” with the entire show now “in jeopardy.” The insider elaborated, “Sophie has been throwing herself into the role, but the gruelling physicality of being Lara Croft has meant she has pushed her body too far.” The fear among those on set is palpable, with many speculating that Turner may indeed need to be replaced if her recovery timeline extends beyond what the production schedule can accommodate. The role, it seems, has pushed her “to the limit.”

The source further highlighted the production headaches, stating, “But so much has already been shot that it’s causing a real headache for producers.” Representatives for Sophie Turner and Amazon Prime have been approached for comment.
Turner herself had previously spoken about her awareness of a recurring back injury during the intense training regimen she commenced in February of the previous year. In a candid interview, she revealed the sheer scale of her preparation. “We’ve been doing eight hours a day, five days a week since February last year, of training. Yeah, so it’s been a lot,” she shared. She also opened up about the physical toll, admitting, “I’ve learned I have a perpetual back problem, but I also realised that it’s much easier to kind of build muscle if you’ve ever worked out before in your life, which I never had, so it has taken me months and months and months to get into good shape.”
From Sansa Stark to Tomb Raider: A New Challenge
While Sophie Turner is widely recognised for her portrayal of Sansa Stark in the acclaimed HBO series Game of Thrones, she has emphasized that her years on that show did not adequately prepare her for the physical demands of Lara Croft. She explained that her character on Game of Thrones was never involved in significant action sequences. “No, I was the cool queen who, like, didn’t have to do that. I also just kind of was the one that got beat up, not the one doing the beating,” Turner stated. She expressed a newfound enjoyment in mastering the offensive aspects of combat, noting, “So, it’s quite nice to learn how to throw a punch and not just take it.”

A Creative Powerhouse Behind the Scenes
The new Lara Croft project is spearheaded by the immensely talented Phoebe Waller-Bridge, known for her work on Fleabag. Waller-Bridge is serving as the creator, writer, and executive producer for the series. She officially announced Turner’s casting last September, expressing her excitement. “I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” Waller-Bridge declared. She went on to articulate the unique opportunity the project presents: “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving.” Waller-Bridge also conveyed the passion of the entire team, adding, “Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out, Croft is coming.”
Sophie Turner joins a distinguished cast for this video game adaptation, which also includes established actors such as Sigourney Weaver and Jason Isaacs. The series aims to bring the beloved adventurer to a new generation, though the current production setback presents a significant hurdle to that goal.
