Laulilii’s Fate in Controversial Tackle

Wests Tigers Player Faces Potential Ban After Controversial Tackle

Wests Tigers winger Luke Laulilii is facing a potential one-match ban following a mid-air tackle that has raised concerns about the safety of Eels player Bailey Simonsson. The incident occurred during the second half of a thrilling 22-20 win in golden point, and Simonsson is now believed to have suffered a suspected dislocated ankle, which could see him miss the rest of the season.

Laulilii was penalised for the tackle, but the decision has sparked controversy among the Tigers’ coaching staff. Coach Benji Marshall expressed his disagreement with the penalty, suggesting it may have been influenced by the injury caused to Simonsson. “Didn’t agree, simple as that,” Marshall said when questioned about the sin bin. He also mentioned that skipper Api Koroisau received a $3,000 fine for a separate hip-drop tackle.

Simonsson’s injury has added to the growing list of long-term setbacks for the Eels. J’maine Hopgood has already been ruled out for the season due to a similar injury, while fullback Isaiah Iongi is expected to be sidelined until round 13 after sustaining a syndesmosis injury from another foul play incident.

Eels coach Jason Ryles commented on the recurring issue of foul play leading to serious injuries. “It just happens that it’s foul play that’s injuring the guys, and that they’re long-term injuries. There are two season-enders and one eight-weeker,” he said. Ryles acknowledged that while players may not intend to cause harm, certain actions are outlawed due to their potential consequences.

Despite the challenges, the Eels found some positive moments in the game. Youngster Apa Twidle made his NRL debut off the bench and immediately made an impact with a remarkable try in the corner on his first touch. He later scored a second try to help his team regain momentum. Twidle is likely to be named on Tuesday despite leaving the stadium with his right arm in a sling, although it is believed to be a minor AC joint issue.

The Eels are also considering dispensation options to manage the financial impact of multiple injuries. Ryles mentioned that the club may seek salary cap relief, stating, “Surely I think it’d be something worth considering. Foul play, season-ending injury, there should possibly be something where common sense would prevail.”

Ryles faces uncertainty regarding his team’s right edge for the upcoming game against the Titans. Centre Sean Russell has been ruled out after suffering a head clash with Tigers teenager Heamasi Makasini during a tackle. However, Ryles confirmed that Russell is fine and only received a grade one dangerous contact charge, which resulted in a fine.

Another concern for the Eels is five-eighth Jonah Pezet, who has suffered a hamstring injury. “Jonah’s got a hammy. Low grade, we think at this stage, but again we’ll get it scanned and see the extent of it,” Ryles said. He added that he believes he has a better chance of playing than Pezet next week.

The Eels continue to navigate a challenging season filled with both setbacks and moments of hope. As they look ahead to their next match, the focus will be on adapting to the current circumstances and ensuring the team remains competitive despite the obstacles.
