The Australian music scene, and indeed the global stage, mourns the passing of the legendary singer-songwriter Chip Taylor, who died at the age of 86. Taylor, a master craftsman of melodies and lyrics, left an indelible mark on popular music with his iconic contributions, most notably penning the enduring hits ‘Wild Thing’ and ‘Angel of the Morning’. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, in hospice care.
His children, Kris and Kelly, shared the heartbreaking news, their words conveying a profound sense of loss but also a deep appreciation for their father’s lifelong passion. They spoke of his unwavering love for music and its power to forge genuine connections with people from all walks of life.
Born James Wesley Voight in Yonkers, New York, on March 21, 1940, Taylor’s early life took an unexpected turn. Before dedicating himself to the world of music, he nurtured a promising career in golf. However, the allure of songwriting ultimately proved irresistible. His professional journey in the music industry began with a significant publishing deal with April Blackwood, a company that would later evolve into industry giants EMI and Sony Music, signalling the commencement of an illustrious and impactful career.
A Songwriting Dynamo: Crafting Timeless Anthems
Taylor’s songwriting prowess first exploded onto the global scene in 1966 with the raw, electrifying energy of ‘Wild Thing’. Originally recorded by The Troggs, the track became an instant classic and a cornerstone of rock and roll history. Its influence was so profound that it was deservedly inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2019. The song’s raw power transcended its original recording, inspiring legendary renditions by guitar virtuosos like Jimi Hendrix and the pioneering all-female rock band The Runaways, each bringing their unique fire to the iconic track.
Just a year later, in 1967, Taylor penned another masterpiece, ‘Angel of the Morning’. This beautifully melancholic ballad, first recorded by Evie Sands, showcased a different facet of his songwriting talent, highlighting his versatility and emotional depth. The enduring appeal of ‘Angel of the Morning’ is evidenced by its remarkable longevity, with countless artists covering the song over the decades. Notable interpretations by the soulful Dusty Springfield and the reggae superstar Shaggy demonstrate the track’s timeless quality and its ability to resonate across genres and generations.
Beyond the Hits: A Career of Collaboration and Innovation
Chip Taylor’s influence extended far beyond his own recorded material. He possessed a rare gift for crafting songs that spoke to the hearts of diverse audiences, making him a highly sought-after collaborator for some of the most revered artists in music history. His compositions were recorded by legends such as the Man in Black himself, Johnny Cash, the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, and the inimitable Janis Joplin, among many others. Each of these artists found in Taylor’s songwriting a perfect vehicle for their own unique vocal stylings and emotional expressions.
As a performer in his own right, Taylor released a substantial body of work, captivating audiences with his distinctive voice and heartfelt delivery. In 2007, he took a significant step to further nurture emerging talent and maintain his creative independence by founding Train Wreck Records. This venture allowed him to continue shaping the music scene on his own terms, fostering new artists and releasing his own prolific output.
Family, Golf, and a Lasting Legacy
Taylor’s personal life was as rich and fulfilling as his professional one. He is survived by his devoted children, Kris and Kelly, and his five cherished grandchildren. His beloved wife of over six decades, Joan Carole Frey, sadly passed away the previous year, leaving a void that was deeply felt.
A poignant testament to his enduring connection with family and his commitment to future generations came in 2011 when Taylor collaborated with his grandchildren on the song ‘Kids to Save the Planet’. This heartwarming project underscored his belief in the power of music to inspire positive change and his desire to leave a better world for those who would follow.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Metropolitan Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund. This thoughtful gesture reflects Chip Taylor’s lifelong connection to the game of golf, a passion that remained with him throughout his life and served as another significant thread in the rich tapestry of his personal journey. His music, his collaborations, and his unwavering spirit will continue to inspire for years to come.
