Lewis Hamilton and the Transformation of Fashion in Formula 1
For many years, the Formula 1 paddock was a place where team wear was dominated by sponsor logos and traditional designs. However, one driver changed this landscape forever—Lewis Hamilton. While other drivers occasionally showed interest in fashion, it was Hamilton who truly intertwined style with the sport, creating a lasting impact.
Hamilton’s journey into fashion began during his early days in F1. He recalled the restrictive environment he faced in the late 2000s, where drivers were expected to conform to strict dress codes. “For most of my career, every driver arrived in team kits designed by people outside of fashion; the clothes were horrendous,” he said. This lack of creativity and personal expression frustrated him, leading him to question the norms of the sport.
He expressed his desire to show up in his own style, but it wasn’t an easy path. “It took a long time to get the bosses to agree. I basically had to break the rules.” Eventually, he decided to take matters into his own hands. “I just turned up one day in my own clothes,” he admitted. This bold move not only caught the attention of the media but also set the stage for what would later be known as the paddock catwalk.
Once the management saw the positive impact of his choices, they allowed him to continue dressing as he pleased. “Once they saw the attention and positive press it brought, and how it elevated the brand and the team, they allowed me to do it every single day.” This shift opened the door for other drivers to express their individuality on the track.
Drivers like Lando Norris and Max Verstappen have followed in Hamilton’s footsteps, showcasing their unique styles at events. “Corporate companies often don’t think about the style or the suit. Now, it’s become the norm to see other drivers turning up as themselves,” Hamilton noted with pride.
The Influence of Music and Identity
Hamilton’s passion for fashion was influenced by his love for music. Growing up in a household where fashion wasn’t a topic of discussion, he found inspiration in the music industry. “When I was younger, I was always buying magazines or going to stores to read them. I was heavily influenced by music; as soon as I got home, I’d put on MTV Base or VH1. I wasn’t watching TV shows or cartoons; it was music.”
He was inspired by artists such as Prince, Pharrell, and Mary J. Blige, who all expressed themselves through their style. “Pharrell was always a big influence,” he said. This exposure to diverse expressions of identity helped shape his approach to fashion.

Embracing Diversity and Local Culture
Hamilton’s journey into fashion also involved embracing diversity and local culture. “There was a time when I’d say I was sort of urban chic. That’s changed. I only really channel that when I am travelling.” He enjoys using his platform to highlight up-and-coming designers rather than just top brands.
Despite his access to exclusive design houses, Hamilton remains modest in his tastes. “I still love Camden market and have an appreciation for vintage tees, particularly ones with images of Michael Jordan or Muhammad Ali.” This blend of high fashion and streetwear reflects his unique personality.
Supporting Ferrari in the Fashion World
This year, Hamilton continues to support Ferrari in its push into the fashion industry. “The Ferrari fashion brand has been growing, and to see it expand with its first store in London is a privilege. They’re doing very big fashion shows—they had Anna Wintour there!” His involvement in the fashion world has been invaluable, especially after co-chairing the 2025 Met Gala alongside the Vogue editor-in-chief.
Hamilton’s influence extends beyond the track, shaping the way drivers and teams approach fashion. His journey from a young driver seeking identity to a fashion icon has transformed the Formula 1 paddock into a vibrant space for self-expression.
