Liam Gallagher has made light of his previous criticisms of the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame after Oasis were confirmed as this year’s inductees. The 53-year-old singer, along with his brother Noel Gallagher, 58, had previously expressed strong disapproval of the institution. In 2024, Liam told The Sunday Times: ‘As much as I love Mariah Carey and all that, I want to say: Do me a favor and f*** off. It’s like putting me in the rap hall of fame, and I don’t want to be part of anything that mentally disturbed. Besides, I’ve done more for rock & roll than half of them clowns on that board, so it’s all a load of bollocks.’
Now that the band has officially been announced as inductees, Liam has taken a different approach. He took to X with a tongue-in-cheek ‘acceptance speech,’ writing: ‘I wanna thank all the people who voted for us. It’s a real honour ever since I was a little kid and singing in the shower I’d dream about 1 day being in the RnR hall of fame. It’s true what they say, anything is possible if you have a dream. LG x.’
Fans quickly pointed out the apparent change of heart, with one user replying: ‘what happened to not wanting to be in it hmmmmmm.’
Gallagher leaned into the joke, responding with another self-deprecating post. He wrote: ‘Well I was speaking to my mummy last night when the news broke and she thinks I may have been a little hasty with my perception of the organization. She’s told me to stop being a dick and go to the awards and behave and you never know you might enjoy it.’

The Manchester rocker had previously dismissed the Hall of Fame on several occasions, saying he wasn’t interested in receiving an award from ‘some geriatric in a cowboy hat.’ Earlier this week, however, he hinted at a change of heart, joking about ‘reverse psychology vibes’ after the nomination was announced.
When a fan teased that he wasn’t ‘too good for it after all,’ Gallagher replied simply: ‘Nope.’ He also joked that his real acceptance speech would involve ‘a box of chocolates and flowers’ and an apology to organisers.
Oasis are part of a strong British showing in the 2026 class, with six UK acts among the eight inductees — a record for the Hall’s 40-year history. The previous record for British inductees in a single year was five, set in 2019 when Radiohead, The Cure, Def Leppard, Roxy Music and The Zombies were honoured. As recently as 2021, there were no British inductees at all.
Artists become eligible 25 years after their first commercial release. Liam isn’t the only Gallagher to have expressed ambivalence. His brother Noel Gallagher previously said he would not attend an induction ceremony, despite visiting the Hall of Fame museum in Cleveland. ‘I know what it is… it won’t be happening,’ he said in 2017, though he joked: ‘I certainly think I do’ deserve inclusion.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame selects nominees via a panel of around 40 music industry figures, before more than 1,200 voters — including all living inductees — cast ballots.
The first British act inducted was The Beatles in 1988, though even that moment was marked by internal tensions, with Paul McCartney skipping the ceremony.
This year’s induction ceremony will take place on 14 November at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
