Liverpool Fans Plan Protests Over Ticket Price Increases
Liverpool fans are preparing a series of protests against the recent decision to raise ticket prices, despite widespread opposition from supporters. The move has sparked anger among the fanbase, who feel their concerns have been ignored by the club’s management.
Earlier this month, it was announced that general admission tickets would increase in line with inflation for the next three seasons. This decision came despite ongoing discussions with the Supporters’ Board, which had urged the club to freeze ticket prices. The club, which reported a profit after tax of £8m last season, justified the price hikes by citing a significant rise in matchday operating costs—up 85% since the 2016-17 season.
The protests, organized by the supporters group Spirit of Shankly (SoS), will begin with Saturday’s home game against Fulham. The group has vowed that these actions will “grow and escalate” over time. This approach echoes a similar protest in 2016, when fans staged a 70th-minute walkout against a proposed £70 match ticket. That led to a U-turn by the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group.
“Liverpool FC has chosen to ignore clear, overwhelming opposition from its own supporters and push ahead with plans to increase ticket prices for the next three seasons,” said a statement from SoS. “The open meeting online, the survey and countless conversations all point to the same thing: fans do not accept this decision.”
The group emphasized that the decision to lock in ticket prices for three years removes “meaningful annual security from supporters.” They also warned that if not challenged, this precedent could spread across the Premier League.
“This decision sits with ownership. They have made the call. They can reverse it,” the statement added. “We will be taking steps to make sure that message reaches them directly.”
Among the measures being taken is a call for fans to avoid spending money inside the stadium and to delay renewing their season tickets until close to the deadline. These tactics aim to put financial pressure on the club and highlight the discontent among supporters.
Despite the protests, Liverpool remains committed to consulting with the Supporters’ Board. While the club respects the right to protest, it expressed disappointment that it is seen as the next step in resolving the issue.
Key Points of the Protest
- The decision to increase ticket prices has faced strong opposition from Liverpool fans.
- The new pricing model locks in increases for three seasons, removing annual flexibility for supporters.
- Spirit of Shankly (SoS) has organized protests that will escalate over time, starting with the Fulham match.
- Previous protests, such as the 2016 walkout, led to a reversal of similar decisions.
- The group is urging fans to avoid spending money inside Anfield and to delay season ticket renewals.
- Liverpool maintains its commitment to consultation with the Supporters’ Board, though it is disappointed by the current situation.

Impact on the Club and Fans
The protests are expected to affect both the club and its fanbase in several ways. Financial pressure from reduced spending inside the stadium could impact matchday revenue, while delayed season ticket renewals may create uncertainty for the club’s planning. Additionally, the growing unrest among fans could influence the club’s long-term relationship with its supporters.
The situation highlights the tension between club management and fans over ticket pricing. While the club argues that rising costs necessitate the increases, fans believe the decision undermines their loyalty and financial contributions. As the protests continue, the outcome could set a precedent for future discussions on ticket pricing across the Premier League.
For now, the focus remains on ensuring that the voices of Liverpool fans are heard and that the club considers their concerns before proceeding with any further changes.
